Anyone going to go for these (not my advert of course !) ?:

By all accounts these are THE best planetary eyepieces ever produced.

Allowing for the value of the included filters, I guess thats around £800 per eyepiece

Hmmm, a bit steep. Amazing to see them come up for sale, and unused! I wonder what the story was there. I was wondering just this morning how much a single one would cost - now I know! Thanks for the interesting find. Pity he didn't put picture on.

It is tempting John, what do you get in a full set ?

I wonder what eye relief they have

The set on UK AB&S seems quite "full" to me. ER will be around 80% of the focal length as per the abbe ortho design.

On other forums you see planetary eyepieces discussed in terms of  top tier,  2nd tier, and "others" with lots of debate about whice eyepieces fit into the 2nd tier and others but pretty much a concensus that the top tier comprises ZAO's, ZAO II's, TMB Supermonocentrics and the Pentax XO. Of those I've only owned a TMB Supermonocentric.

Personally I think the differences between eyepieces in all three tiers is minimal very often

Wow. I've had a look through two in a baader binoviewer and frac (can't remember which) at an observing night on Salisbury plain. Views were crystal clear on both planetary and deep sky objects. I'd love to go for them but can't justify the price - not even one.

Very rare one ever sees a full set up for grabs. That price makes mine and your Ethos and all the rest look very good value. I wonder if I were to buy such a set of eyepieces whether I would dare use them for fear of dropping one.

Alan.

I had a look through a ZAO II 6mm once but I really can't remember much about it. Perhaps thats a good enough reason not to spend £400+ on one !

There is one of those Leica Asph zooms on  AB&S as well which seems to get pretty close to ZAO quality - somewhere between the XW / Delos / Baader GO level and ZAO / Pentax XO I think. At least your £400+ gets a range of FL's covered with that one and a decent FoV / eye relief to boot.

Oh, and the TMB Supermono's on the same site are priced at £375 apiece if anyone is curious.

personally, I'd be amazed if in the UK you would see the benefit of this sort of eyepiece. it's very specialist and although I am sure they are very good, in UK conditions the differences would be minimal I'd think. OK in places where the skies are very stable you might get a lot more benefit but not here. I'd sooner have my set of 14 TV and BGOs I reckon, which cost less than half of this set.

if you have the cash though and are a planetary specialist then fill your boots!

Faulksy,

I have seen the Pup many times as John rightly said. I have had problems lately with it only because I am trying to sort of copy UK latitude and only viewing it when it is below 20 degree above the horizon. When that was not possible I am now trying to crack it with a 70mm ED, making life hard for myself, so far I am unable to do both, that only goes to show how well some members did seeing it in the UK, albeit from southern areas.

In all honesty with regards the Zeiss, as far as orthos go with the difficult ER at short F/Ls I am very happy with my BGO's, I would stretch to a 5mm Pentax XO if one came up but 375 pounds for a Supermono and much more for a ZO II is a lttle too rich for my taste. I would love to try one though.

Read the add,  the filters " all come with plastic cases". Oooooooo !   :Envy:

Better not waste his time, he sounds very important.

Were you quick enough to grab this one?

http://www.astrobuysell.com/uk/propview.php?view=78746

I saw that one as well.

Zeiss ZAO's, TMB Supermonocentric's, Leica ASPH zoom and now Pentax XO's. Arguably the top performing eyepieces ever, rare as hens teeth and all come up on UK AB&S from different sellers within the space of a week !

Bah. I'd rather have a TMB Supermonocentric! :-)

I had the 5mm Supermono for a while. Great EP but darned hard work with my undriven scopes. They used to change hands for £100 used back then though.
