2012 DSO imaging showcase

Recommended Posts

Please use this thread to showcase your best images captured during 2012. Just one post per member but you can include up to 5 images if you want.

The thread is for all imagers novices and advanced. Hopefully we will be able to do the same again next year. Over time we will be able to see the progress which is being made by individuals and as a forum.

Please keep details to a minimum - scope and camera possibly along with a few comments.

The thread needs to be packed with images so please don't respond to the postings

An up and down year for me. These 5 images make up nearly all my 2012 deep sky imaging :embarassed:

The Crescent, Pacman and Thor's Helmet were captured using a Skywatcher MN190 and a QSI 532 camera. M45 and M42 were both taken using a Tak FSQ 106 reduced to F3.8. The camera was an SX M26c

My humble efforts from 2012 ,

All shot with the 1000D ( unmodded ) and SW ED80Pro.

The shot I'd waited 40 years for , The Horsehead and Flame Nebulae.

Bit of a year of two halves for me... I started the year using a WO FLT-98 with an SX-H9 camera and from fairly limited clear skies came up with an image of the Jellyfish (well, part thereof):

post-649-0-04575300-1360275441_thumb.jpg

SGL 7 gave me a chance to capture the Leo Triplet:

post-649-0-73755900-1360275328_thumb.jpg

Note the lack of a chance to get beyond one channel.

Later in the year I started using a Borg 77EDII and an SX-694 and have been able to produce the following:

California Nebula in Ha:

The Rosette, also in Ha:

Finally, in colour (at last) I ended the year with the North American Nebula:

2013 will hopefully be the year of colour for me :)

It feels like I'd hardly done any imaging in 2012, but looking back there are actually a few to choose from... The one addition to my setup this year was a 2" Ha filter, which enabled me to better capture emission nebulae using HaOSC technique; so that's what most of my 2012 images are!

All images taken with SW 150PDS & Canon 450D.

Heart & Soul, 9-panels:

Crescent, 2-panels:

IC63:

gallery_5051_2372_315342.jpg

M31, 2 panels:

gallery_5051_2372_771424.jpg

And, included because it's one of the less common targets, Sh2-132:

An interesting year where I changed my scope and added another camera into the mix. All of these images taken with the Pentax 75SDHF.

In no apparent order, the Heart nebula was a mosaic of 12 panes taken with the Atik 314L+ and Baader 7nm Ha filter.

post-5681-0-11506400-1360324246_thumb.jp

The Elephants trunk was my first narrowband image ever, taken with the Atik 314L+

post-5681-0-64441500-1360324321_thumb.jp

Ced214 was a tricky one! Again take with the 314L+

post-5681-0-72736800-1360324375_thumb.jp

Mel15 was taken with the 314L+

post-5681-0-25296600-1360324434_thumb.jp

Finally the Jellyfish, the first image that I took with the Atik 460EX - It was nice to get a wider fov.

First off, one done with Yves and the ODK14 he keeps here.

M51%20DEC%20VERSION%20clip-M.jpg

And then a collaboration with Tom, Les and Ian;

M31%20LES%20OLLY%20TOM%20TEC%20CORE-M.jpg*$

More data added to this ever deepening M42 which has been on the go for years!

M42%20WIDE%202FLsV3-M.jpg

A new Rosette...

ROSETTE%20FIN3WEB-M.jpg

And another marathon with Yves.

M27_HaO111RGBWEB-L.jpg

This year I've tried to learn about starfields, keeping stars small and boosting their colour. 2013 should be the year of the Atik11000 for me. FIngers crossed...

I have spent most of 2012 concentrating on Project shots. One of which I can't find at the moment. So I'm throwing in a Summer project of just a bottom row so far. All pics taken with an FSQ106N and Atik 11000.

2012 was a bit of a wash-out in regard to the weather. But it stayed clear just long enough to grab this lot,. Ive attached the pics this time round as last years bunch suffered from broken links.

All shot with the ED80 and Atik 314L+

Soul nebula:

index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=84665

Heart of the Heart nebula:

index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=84667

Cant leave this one out! As seen on Stargazing Live, the Witches Broom (NGC6960)

index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=84669

The same area but expanded upon, this took ages!

index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=84672

And lastly, another chunk of Cygnus: DWB111 The propellor nebula

All images taken with a Moravian G2 8300 using Astrodon narrowband filters and a small selection of camera lenses.

NGC 7822, the qusestion mark. 180mm lens at f2.8 and a little extra detail from a 250mm lens at f4 for CED 214.

The Flaming Star. A two panel mosaic using a 150mm lens at f4.

Crescent mosaic using a 250mm lens at f4.

North American area using a 150mm at f4.

The Crescent. A reasonably tight crop from the 250mm lens at f4 ( See the Crescent mosaic ) with O111 added at Kelling. The little bubble shows very well in the bottom right corner.

It´s been a poor year for me and I could only seem to get a few pics sorted out.

I thought this winter would be good but there has only been 1 or 2 nights clear.

Still, I had fun with a new mount this year and finally got around to using the QHY8L after it had been sat in a cupboard for a year ;-D

As with everybody else here in the UK 2012 was a struggling year. I started off recovering from a total knee replacement so was rather restricted in and out of the POD but things did improve as (rarely) did the weather.....

2012 was my first year in Astronomy and what a learning curve it was....

My first images were taken with a Canon DSLR and an EQ3-2 with guiding from a finder-guider webcam.

My first image ever posted on SGL was this one from Feb 2012....

6924198187_1d509caaeb_z.jpg

The highlights for me were moving up to a HEQ5 mount from an EQ3-2, getting into CCD imaging and acquiring Telescope No. 2, my little Altair Wave Series Refractor.

I'm significantly poorer 12 months later, but loving this hobby......

Thanks to everyone on these forums for guiding me through! Especially thanks to Quatermass for all his help and support in the early days.

These are the images I'm happiest with from 2012, hoping 2013 is as satisfying!
