Solar imaging with a refractor and DSLR
Nigella Bryant replied to Iem1's topic in Getting Started With Imaging
White Light is really interesting, I love the granulation and magnetic lines in the sunspots. I use an 80ed stopped down to 60mm using a Lunt Hershel wedge and Zwo ASI 178mm mono camera. Use autostakker3, ImPPG and Photoshop CS2 for processing. -
Solar imaging with a refractor and DSLR

Sooooo true. -
I know, lot's, AR3007 is a really nice complex group now. I think AR3011 will be too. AR3007, 3010 and 3011 seem to have complex magnetic distrubances too in hydrogen alpha hopefully more flares and sunspot growth.
-
Hi all, lots of AR's about, yersterday there were several flares but today didn't see any. Screenshots to show what was about yesterday and today.
-
That's what I tell people, we have a star on our doorstep that we can observe in wonderful detail.
-
I'd be looking at the second hand market personally, I did when getting my Lunt 60mm double stack. PST are hard to reach focus for imaging, I couldn't get enough InFocus when I had one years ago. I much preferred the Lunt 35mm now replaced with the Lunt 40mm. Have you considered a Lunt CaK module to start with. You can see surface details and prom's in calcium ii k, you can use it with any cheaper aromatic scope up to 100mm. Personally if you go that root it's best to go for a 120mm aromatic and stop it down to the 100mm.

Lively activity again today in HA, Cak and WL.

Hopefully process tomorrow. -
-
Yep, you'll be hooked but when you are your wallet won't like it, lol. It's worth it though. just todays snippets in Calcium II K proms and HA full disk screenshots.
-
Solar processing is rather different than for night stuff. Have you used autostakker3 and ImPPG? All free.
-
I would say no coincidence since filaments are constrained by magnetic activity.
-
I had the same problem with focusing today, atmospheric turbulence in abundance unfortunately.
-
Yep, no safety issues using the secondary double stack filter just need to fabricate an adaptor.
-
Yep, activity has been amazing for several months now and will only get better. I love White Light too, as much as Hydrogen Alpha and Calcium II K.
-
Hi all, some nice activity going on these last couple of days. Screenshots attached. Wanted to bring out the magnetic lines in AR3004 but yesterday and today AR3006 exhibits strong magnetic lines too so something to keep an eye on over the next several days.

SGL 2022 Challenge 4 - Solar
Nigella Bryant replied to MartinB's topic in SGL Challenges and Competitions
From the 1st April 2022, no joke, lol. 60mm Lunt DS, Zwo ASI 178mm. 40% stack of 1000 frames. False colour added in Photoshop CS2. -
Lol, I'd be cat-atonic.
-
Awwww, the good life in old age for Omar. My cat is also sooo layed back, also gets picked on by the local cat's but his sister protects him, lol. He's a big softy.

Must confess both mine are the one,'s really in control although I like to think I am, but I guess as long as I only think I am they're happy, lol.
-
Awwwww, bless, mine think they're in charge, lol.

My DayStar Solar Scout SS60-ds thread
Nigella Bryant replied to Ags's topic in Discussions - Scopes / Whole setups
I use electronic focusers on my scope's because it's quite difficult to achieve fine focussing. Not impossible, just more difficult particularly at high focal ratios. -
I'm convinced they love solar, lol.

My DayStar Solar Scout SS60-ds thread
Nigella Bryant replied to Ags's topic in Discussions - Scopes / Whole setups
I use a permanent mounted configuration of scope's and use cart-du-ceil and green swamp server for telescope control and firecapture, autostakker3, ImPPG and Photoshop for image stacking and processing. Centre's every time in the scope's. I've not got the Scout but principles are the same. -
Amazing flare on Sun’s limb right now!!
Nigella Bryant replied to Highburymark's topic in Celestial Events Heads Up
Unfortunately I missed that one to being clouded out. Typical, but there will be many more as we're still heading towards maximum in two or so years.
