  1. Had a look at Venus after sunset. A bit .. unimpressive. I might have been spoiled by Jupiter and Saturn

The flaming volcanos are there! Only they are hidden beneath a thick layer of opaque clouds made of sulfuric acid. :(

And the Deathstars are hidden inside the volcanoes & doubly protected with a cloaking device. :0)

  2. I continue to love my Heritage 130. I know it's not a 250 - but it still offers some satisfying views.

I expect also some people new to the hobby perhaps see the Heritage as a halfway house between a toy scope and a proper scope, because it is so small and compact. After all, it is actually less than 1 inch smaller compared in aperture compared to much bigger looking 6 inch sky-watcher DOB. I am glad I got this scope, it ain't no toy :D As bang for buck goes, I would think it must be hard to beat as an all-rounder, unless you are a lucky git like Jonathan and managed to get that 6 inch f...

.. for 50 or 60 quid, whatever it was. I've never had any luck on ebay :( expect when I press the BUY IT NOW button :D

£60. Cost £7.90 in bus fares to get there and back :).

  3. Gah! Unexpect windfall prompts aperture fever! It's a good complaint.

I'm thinking solid over flex - solid would fit across the back of my car still. But which one? SW? GSO? OO(!)?

    3. AlexB67

      AlexB67

For me that was easy as SW are the only ones to do the flex, otherwise a hard call, the skyquest 10 has an RDF already ( minor point) . Overall I found it a hard call IMO, you have time to ponder :)

Unless you go for one of the more expensive orion optics ones, better optics, more expensive.

  4. Completed the Messier Catalog last night with a very faint view of M83

      Tzitzis

Very nice. It must be brilliant the way you feel now. No Messiers for me through a scope. Have seen the Pleiades, the Andromeda galaxy and M8 and M20 through binos though

  5. Yay! UHC filter has arrived. Looking through it in daylight is trippy.

I'd be interested to hear a little report what it brings in your scope, seeing we got pretty much the same equipment :)

    4. AndyWB

      AndyWB

Will do, if I get a chance to take it out - real life is taking up a little time at the moment, and it was a bit hazy last night anyway.

  6. I'm starting to worry my 130p will look inadequate at Astrocamp...

      'Cos of the weather forecast?

    4. emadmoussa

      emadmoussa

Well, long story...I bought a giro mount then when it arrived it was faulty and it's been returned and currently awaiting a replacement ffrom Explore Scientific. My NEQ6 is on a pillar, which I can't use in the field. And most importantly the weather forecast is not promising - so even if I manage to secure a tripod for the EQ6, I don't see why bother really.

  7. Ordered 250px Dob at the weekend.

      AlexB67

Glad you got one and good luck with it. :) Resolve it you will :D clusters take on a whole new dimension, even under LP skies.

Oh, very nice! That's hopefully my next scope ...probably next month.

Yep, I'm tech free now and my asto life is much easier...

I use a 12V 7ah battery and can connect the 12V hairdryer via an adapter (cigarette socket for hairdryer and clips for battery).

    4. AndyWB

      AndyWB

Hmm. Yes, I'm wondering; if I started building a leisure battery type thing, I'd be tempted to just get a secondary heater...

Vastly beyond anything that exists, or is even remotely planned. To see the lunar lander for example would need a scope with a mirror larger than 600 metres if I remember correctly!

    4. T-J

      T-J

This is one of those occasions where you would have to Think outside the proverbial box and solve the question with something totallynew and revolution in the history of astronomy. Instead of thinking about aperture *which would be a ASIMHT (Astronomical Super Incredibly Mind-boggingly Huge Telescope)anyway. Instead I would opt for a system of maneuverable telescopes working in a sort of a chain. You know, you look through the first one, at your location, find the nearest one in the chain, an...

Not from home - I live in the middle of town - but from this latitude, yes. And Viewing; I don't do astrophotography!

I have 2 fake sunrises at the moment, reading town centre to the ESE and some railway works NNE...and have I ever mentioned my neighbours artificial sun project before? :D

  21. Still bothered by who named some of these DSOs. "Hagrid's Dragon", for instance. And surely there should be a "Dobby"?

    1. HumptyMoo

      HumptyMoo

Chances are probably good that some planet somewhere actually has a dobsonian constellation...even if no one is there to name it. As for Hagrid....tis' better than "Puff the magic"? :)

    2. AndyWB

      AndyWB

Totally! I'm not complaining - I quite like the name.

  22. Still chuffed that I finally got the collimation on my 10" right ... I think...
