Astronomy books at the Edward Worth Library, Dublin

Recommended Posts

Surfing the internet, I recently came across an interesting little library in Dublin which includes a small but rather choice collection of astronomy books mainly from the seventeenth century.

Edward Worth (1678-1733) was a leading Dublin doctor who left his personal library to the Dr Steeven's Hospital. Obviously the collection is strong on medicine, but covers other areas including over 60 early books on astronomy with works by Brahe, Galileo, Huygens etc. The hospital closed in the 1980s, but the library remains intact and can be visited by appointment.

The librarian, Dr Boran, has prepared several on-line exhibitions reflecting aspects of the collection. In 2009 she put up some pages on astronomy - nice stuff! Here's the link: http://astronomy.edwardworthlibrary.ie/

If you want to identify specific books in the holding, there is also an on-line catalogue: http://edwardworthlibrary.ie/our-catalogue/
