should I modify a logitech Webcam for planetary imaging or get that svbony 105 planetary camera. I don't know the image quality svbony camera . If the Svbony camera is better than a modified Webcam please tell me

I got a Jupiter HD Webcam today i have tested it out it works in daylight pretty nice also it actually does have some exposure controll thats even with IR Filter still on cam so it be pretty cool without IR Filter when i mod it to telescope sometime. it also is YUY2 video setting and maximum reso is 1280 x 1024 I will test it with moon sometime and for laugh test with Jupiter Pretty nice cams from maplins

Hi all I am trying to get good clear images of the Foucault test images of my mirrors. The image of the source at the image plane is about 3 to 4mm across. I purchased a 12mm lens for my pc900 webcam to operate at infinity focus but it can't reach it - the lens unscrews. So I tried to get an image without a lens and it was really clear - but also really large . This is taken about 3mm outside of focus using a ronchi grating on my 12" F/2.7 cassegrain paraboloid primary, hence the hole in the middle. What do others do ?. I don't have enough space for access with a DSLR lens. regards Mike

Hi guys, I've been looking at Genius Facecam 2000 webcam for astrophotography use and it seems intriguing. It has a 2-megapixel CMOS sensor and a manual focusing, which seems quite good for modding, but it's hard to tell if it's wort trying, I have found no reference to astrohptography modding of it anywhere on the internet. I was wondering if any of you have experience with this webcam for astrophotography use? If so, share your thoughts.

Hi guys, I have Skywatcher DOB 250 Flexitube GOTO and recently noticed HD webcam in my friend's place... (AUSDOM AW615 1080P Full HD 12.0M USB2.0) So I received it for few of beers and managed to place it into 1.25' EP holder without any struggle. I haven't removed any filters from webcam, just wanted to see if it will fit in and it did, so I was really happy, but... (unfortunately word "but" always comes after word "happy"), but... the only thing I can see on the screen is my Primary and Secondary mirrors I think, this webcam would be perfect for collimation however, what to do next? I want to see something more than just mirrors, - Moon and Jupiter maybe... I tried to attach 2'' adaptor which comes by default with the telescope to increase the distance between mirrors and webcam... the result is the same. I also used flexitube ability to shorten the tube and reduce Focal length, - no result, just the size of the image is different. Should I try Barlow?

Members, Trying to get my head around imaging with a DSLR and read that a WEBCAM is actually better for planetary targets due to file size and weight therefore, can I hypothetically use a DSLR afocally but on the record video setting and still separate the frames afterwards, edit and stack? Or would they be too large? 9.25 AVX with Canon 550d Rebel2.

Thought it might be interesting to show a comparison of images taken with a DLSR and a webcam. Especially since they were taken on the same night, through the same telescope, right after each other. DSLR image: Skywatcher 80ED + FF/FR, Canon 1000D, 1/250, F6.35, ISO100. 100 frames. Processed in PIPP & Registax 6. Webcam: Skywatcher 80ED + FF/FR, Philips SPC900NC. Composite mosaic of 7 panels, each panel 180 frames. Processed in Registax 6 & Microsoft ICE. Hope you like them and all comments welcome.

Hi all after fixing the issue of not get focus with this test webcam ( rather try in to prove i could use any webcam to a friend) i did not have enough inwards travel with the low profile 10/1 focuser so my fix was to cut the threaded part on the web cam adapter lightly sanded it smoothed clean and hot glued in to place fingers crossed and all the rest . you can see the video i took these from in the video astronomy section here on sgl its not pretty as the photo shows but it works and it records well mainly for moon drift videos for my self ,now i can grab stills from these videos gave it ago and got these lightly edited as they are j pegs and full of noise as you would expect but i like them and i wonder if you do the web cam will be rehoused in a little box i have just for the job will update that next time clear skies Pat

Help! before i pull what hair out that i have left. I have hit an impasse with my avi's, i can get half decent shoots but the images have purple tinges to them and when i put them through Registax this just intensifies the issue. I have tried playing with the white balance but this just turns the images from the web cam 'green instead of purple/blue'. I 'am using the farely standard setting in sharpcap and afew other simular soft packs put the effect still happens, I even tried the fringe killer but no luck there. Other images on SGL for Jupiter almost all have cloud bands of tans and browns. my scope is F8 refractor, using 3X barlow with extension and Spc880 flashed.

Hi! I am afraid that I am on the scrounge for information again from the good people of SGL - one day I hope to be able to give back to this forum as much as I am receiving in these early days. But for now I am mainly all take! I am starting to look at guiding for my astrophotography having read a few posts here and there about using a webcam as a guide camera. There is no way at the moment I can afford a dedicated guiding system - scope & camera. I know from reading other posts to questions similar to this that I can use PHD together with EQMOD to run the mount and that you can use a webcam in certain situations as a guide camera. My question is: do you keep the original lens on the webcam and use it Afocal; or do you take the lens off and direct the light straight onto the chip as you do with imaging with a webcam? I wanted to try this system with my CG5 Advanced GT (this mount has the auto guide port) to see if the other equipment I have (laptop, power pack etc.) can handle it before I start to spend out on more advanced stuff at some point in the future. I have a 6x30 finder scope on my C8 but I also have a 20x50 Mirador spotting scope that I thought I could mount on the main tube if that would be better to use as a guide scope. I appreciate that the magnification on the spotting scope is a bit high but I am using what I have got in order to save money! I hope to be getting a second hand DSLR soon which I will be using for imaging rather than the Philips SPC900NC which I am using at the moment. The SPC900 could then become my guide cam (if it doesn't need its lens ).

Hi I am in the middle of getting together things for imaging, my question is can someone recommend a cheap but decent quality webcam for modifying for astro usage, I did once try a xbox one but had terrible results (possibly a damaged cam though as most people liked those at the time). I looked on Ebay for webcams but most are not what they claim to be like 50 megapixel for under £2 lmao

After a few months of getting used to my new 8 inch beast, I decided to start astrophotography (luckily today is Black Friday in most tech shops in my country). So I decided to drop the idea of buying a DSLR and started thinking about getting a webcam. The thing is that I want to try deepsky AP, so i was wondering, is there a webcam that could get me good results for DSO AP? Don't worry, I don't want anything too fancy because I'll be happy with entry-level images. (i saw some nice Andromeda pictures with 20GBP cameras on this forum so I'm confident that it would work). My budget is ±100 GBP, which in my opinion is more than enough for a good webcam . So... is it worth getting a webcam? Or is there something better? Should I wait and raise more money for a DSLR? Hello to the Linux users. I know that some of you use Linux and the software "Cheese" to record videos that will be stacked into planetary images. I haven't been playing with Linux for a while now, but I know that "Cheese' can be pretty buggy sometimes. I have found a software called "GTK+ UVC Viewer" that, from the reports, seems to be much more stable then cheese and has these main features: - Supports "Universal Video Class" powered webcams - Has a variety of photobooth-like filters, like in Cheese - Like Sharpcap, it supports Dynamic Controls / Vendor Specific Controls (Only Logitech Cams at the moment) - Saving the output in a variety of formats and codecs. I haven't tried the software myself yet, but the reviews seem encouraging and put this software ahead of Cheese. I hope to give it a try as soon as I can. See the official website of GTK+ UVC Viewerfor more infos or try to look it up in your Linux distribution software repository. I hope this will be of use for the Linux users. Clear Skies

Having just read this great guide here on PHD:http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/188777-phd-guiding-basic-use-and-troubleshooting/ Would people be willing to post up their settings so as to give people a known starting point that works or at least a good starting point?As I think it's hard to know what settings to choose in PHD. Something along the lines of: Webcam model: SPC900 Type of guide scope: 9X50 Skywatcher finder scope Then list your settings for PHD This way,it can be kept all in one place for future reference.Sound like a good idea or a non starter?

Hi all, just wanted to share my first stacked Jupiter pic. It's nothing special, but I'm happy enough as it is my first attempt at Jupiter with a webcam. Outside is very windy (especially on the roof) and cloudy, but I managed to capture some wobbly frames of Jupiter between the clouds It was also the first time I was able to do some rough polar alignment and successfully track an object, and the first light for my new Vixen eyepieces and my new Antares 3X Barlow lens. The preview on Sharpcap didn't show any color, even though the Saturation was about 70. I tried to increase it but the image was only showing artifacts rather then colors, so I ended up with monochrome captures any suggestion? Telescope: Skywatcher Explorer 200P Mount: Eq5 + Dual Axis Motor Barlow: Antares 3X Camera: XBOX Live Vision Cam Software: Sharpcap + Registax 6 on Windows XP (Virtual Machine on MacBook Pro) and Adobe Lightroom for OS X Location: Cork City, Ireland Jupiter (click to enlarge) And my rooftop: I have captured several AVI's so I hope come back with better pics. Hi all, haven't been able to get the scope out much lately due to the weather, but have managed a couple of half decent Jupiter images since new year. I've been trying out Autostakkert2 and Planetary Image Preprocessor (PIPP) for preprocessing, aligning and stacking frames instead of Registax, though I am still using Registax6 for wavelets. This is probably my best effort from Jan 5th, a little early for the GRS it is just coming into view on the right hand (Western) limb. Happy new year and clear skies to all

It has been too long since I contributed anything to the forum, so I thought to share with you my latest try in planetary astrophotography. Actually it is my first try with SW 300p Goto Flextube dobsonian which I recently acquired. I wanted to try out how the system tracks for webcam astrophotography, which is my second point of interest after visual observing. In short - it tracked quite well - no jerkyness in tracking, very smooth, stable and centred for a long time, and I am also very happy with my old motor focus which helped me out tremendously. The conditions were very poor though, and the resulting picture is heavily post-processed. At least it managed to capture the colour quite nicely. For caputre, I use a modified Prestigion PWC2 webcam, Baader 2.25x barlow and UV/IR-cut filter. You can see the imaging setup in the second picture.
