Hey guys, am back in town. Had an amazing time in South Africa. Skies quite phenomenal - but almost completely foreign, except for the odd upside down Orion and stuff like that.Looking forward to meeting up sometime. Any news on that possible speaker for later in the year, Soupy? Do we need a committee meet at all?Good to be back - must get the scope out soon and dust off the cobwebs....

Welcome back Steve. We're all still here and had a couple of good sessions out lately

glad to have you back Steve!

we could do with plugging/advertising Dr Sproats talk on the 18th Sept and also getting the council grant application resubmitted etc - but we can sort that one out at the meeting. Also need to finalise plans/events for the next 3 months. can we meet up for a pint one evening this week or early next to get it all squared away?

Good couple of hours company up at winscarr last night.

The clouds didn't really allow any serious observing or imaging but we had a chat if nothing else.

Initiated Sam and missus into the cloud dodging section of the society although they are well behind on the winscarr cloud count so we're still in joint lead Soupy!

Oh that reminds me, we have just had an invitation to Huddersfield astro soc. Event this Friday they have a talk from Derek Ward-Thompson president of the SPA at 7.30 in their club room about how stars and planets form. Might be good if a few of us could go, I might struggle if we are back up in Kielder, so any takers?

Quick update on whats coming up for the society -
Friday 5th September, 2014 @ 7:30pm
Huddersfield Astronomical Society have kindly invited us to a talk they are having this Friday - sorry for the last minute notice. Sounds very interesting and it would be great if a few of us could attend.
Public Lecture - "How stars and planets form - new insight from the Herschel Space Telescope" by Professor Derek Ward-Thompson, Jeremiah Horrocks Institute
HAPS Club Room, 4a Railway Street, Huddersfield, HD1 1JP
Lunar 100 observing session - Wed/Thur/Fri 10/11/12th 9pm onwards (date to be confirmed depending on the weather forecast)
Penine Sailing club car park - Winscar Reservoir, Sheffield S36 4TF (just off Windle Edge) map here:- http://goo.gl/maps/4idCC
A chance to work your way through as many of the Lunar 100 as possible during the full moon. I'll be bringing along a bunch of A3 maps and charts if you dont have a Lunar app on your phone.
Thursday 18th September, monthly society meeting is on at Horbury Academy 7.30pm. We were planning to have Dr Sproats deliver a talk on next years solar eclipse, but unfortunately he has had to cancel the talk. Instead we will be having a talk/presentation on another subject (to be confirmed) - quite possibly Lunar themed to follow on from the observing evening.
Saturday 27th September - Todmorden Observatory visit 7.30pm
As the moon will be out of the way, it would be great to have a society visit to Todmorden Observatory and if the weather plays ball to have some quality viewing and hopefully get to use some of their fabulous equipment.
Car sharing can be arranged.
Saturday October 18th - 'Starting From Scratch' - SPA event in partnership with Green Witch telescopes
We've been invited as a society to come and join the SPA event (see attached pdf) by Dr Sproats of Green Witch (WADAS members FOC). Looks like a really interesting event and by all accounts is very well attended. Besides some interesting speakers and topics, we'll hopefully have a stand there as well - simillar to the Horbury Show stand, which was a great success.
As always, if there is anything you would like to do - want us to organise - want more information on, then please do contact any of the committee members via SGL, email or any of our social media and we'll try and make it happen!
Clear skies
Nick
