hello all,

new member here and trying to learn how this site works,

it is so different from the CN forums.

I am a casual stargazer that fell in love with the night sky in Northern Wisconsin

back in the late 70's and early 80's.

my first telescope was a very cheap 3" reflector ( similar to a Gilbert)

that actually took a lot of skill to use.

but it did show me lunar craters and mountains, 3 cloud bands and moons of Jupiter

saturns rings and Titan, disc of Mars, phases of Venus

Orion Nebulae and the andromeda Galaxy.

then one day the spring loaded pot metal ball and socket joint flew apart.

I had to learn the hard way that sheet metal tripod legs are no good.

clear skies,

Gerry

Hi Gerry & welcome to SGL.

Had my share of optical contraptions in the past & dropped some expensive binoculars, went in the bin as they had permanent double vision after the fall.

Now have some more (carefully handled) binoculars & a small Nikon spotting scope that I can (just) see some of Jupiters moons with them.

Looking for a proper telescope but haven't settled on anything yet, despite all the fantastic advice on this forum from very (beginner friendly) members.

Enjoy the forum and the friendly atmosphere.

Welcome to SGL, Gerry!

Would that have been the Edmund Scientific 3" reflector that I wanted SO badly as a kid, but there was no way I was ever going to get $30 to buy one? Had to settle for my Grandpa's old 30mm spyglass.

Brewers fan?

Dana
