Hi All, just thought i'd introduce myself.

I'm more of a photographer that enjoys snapping starscapes than anything. (Which i'm very new too)

I could only name Orion's belt as a constellation i think.

I'm mostly joining up to get good ideas off of folks and wondering what good dark sky locations there are around the dorset/coastal areas and how do you guys reliably predict cloud cover.

For example right now i'm considering going out but the met-office tells me it'll be cloudy while the sky outside look fairly clear with some cloud in.

As an example of the photos I take though see here;

Thankyou all for the warm welcome.

I did try going out last night as it did look borderline clear and sat24 did seem to suggest a pattern of the clouds parting around my area but aside from the occasional glimpse once I got on location(Purbeck hills) my efforts were mostly thwarted by fog.

Hi and welcome to SGL from Dave in Bournemouth. You have to be careful going to dark secluded places on your own, matchams viewpoint for example has some very shady goings on at night( search on google ). I have found a group which meets at turf hill in the new forest. The next meeting is 14th July and I'm going down for the first time. You can find more info on this group here: http://stargazerslou...ronomers-group/

Very nice photo BTW is that swanage?

Near enough yes. It's Mupe bay, it's slap bang in the middle of the lulworth firing ranges so totally inaccessible 90% of the time, involves a longish hike along the cliffs. Torch definately required! Also the tide can lock you in if you're not careful.

The light pollution is coming from the direction of swanage.

I know what you mean about roaming around on your own at night though. So many carparks are suspiciously occupied at the most peculiar times in the most out of the way places... :s but if I weren't to brave such things alone I'd likely never get anything done.

I know matcham view point's reputation though, it's not far from me.

I tried Bradbury rings recently, not sure about that one yet.
