Greeetings to all. Im a new member to the world of astronomy. As it was my birthday yesterday my wife bought me a telescope. As i am a complete "newby" to this hobby i would be grateful for any info as to "where and what". I live in Midcalder in West Lothian.

Welcome to SGL.

Depending on how much sky you can see the first obvious targets are Venus, Mars and Saturn. The usual recommendations are a copy of the "Turn Left At Orion" book and download Stellarium (for free) so you can see where things are.

Scotland may not be the most giving of places for astronomy in the middle of the summer because of the very short period of full darkness, but a couple of months just getting the hang of things should leave you in good stead for next winter.

Hi Biker and welcome to the lounge, this is the best place to have your astro questions answered as it is full of knowledge and as is often said the only silly question is the one you dont ask. As an intro have a look at this free planetarium download www.stellarium.org/ it is agreat way to help find your way around the cosmos.
