a_canuck
as I watch my beloved canucks hockey team play thought I'd say hello. Have browsed the site for quite a while, finally joined and from the insight from the site bought my first 'scope in 20 odd years! sky-watcher 8 inch dob. first night spectacular view of jupiter and 4 moons! now 3 days of rain and counting. nice thing is there is always this site to peruse! glad to be part of this remarkable community! a_canuck
since there is no such thing as a dumb question, the cover for my telescope has a removable small cover, the reason would be? (I'm guessing for solar?)
brantuk
If that's the off center cap - you can remove it for looking at the moon when it's too bright - it does slightly change the focal ratio but not enough to prevent viewing. It's just to reduce the glare and brightness that hurts your eye. Place it on the moulded lump next to it so you don't lose the cap I reckon it could also have a solar application. Stephen
cheers, had wondered about the lump! Some people tape solar filter behind it and use it as an off axis / reduced aperture solar viewer.I say stuff that and make a full size solar filter and get the best picture
