  1. The S&T article I posted at the top cites this book as a good source of colour descriptions of double stars, so i ordered a copy. in my next post I insert the relevant tables - hope they are legible
  2. Wonderful ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
  3. I have developed astigmatism but only found a problem with astronomy last year (0.75 diopter). Itโ€™s most obvious when using my 8 x 50 finder. I can see it in wide field EPs, but itโ€™s much less obvious. I bought a Dioptrx but hardly ever use as I simply avoid v wide exit pupils.
  4. The time zone of Spain and the historical links noted above also explains why Spaniards eat so late: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20170504-the-strange-reason-spaniards-eat-late
  5. Where do we stand on the scatter reported with this eyepiece that some have reported? Problematic and under which circumstances?
  6. Ah Exchange and Mart! I bought scopes 2 and 3 (6- and 10-inch Newtonians) via that venue.
  7. Not the original, Mike, but a replacement I picked up 8 years ago. Talking of Unitrons and Newts:
  8. I remember thinking at the time that Iโ€™d be prepared to wear a shirt like the boy in the ad if I could have a C14
  9. I bought my first copy of S&T in January 1974. It was the last day of the Christmas school hols and my mum took me to the planetarium at the Old Royal Observatory Greenwich. The January 2024 shows the same edition in its 50 years on column ๐Ÿ˜ฎ. My, how time flies!
  10. Are you sponsored by a high street bank? ๐Ÿค”
  11. Glad Mrs F15Rules let you out, Dave. You must have been well and truly baffled ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
  12. We often discuss the merits of observing with a small telescope. And we sometimes discuss coloured doubles. This comment in 1993 March S&T by James Mullaney is intriguing
  13. Hmmm, thereโ€™s a Dob in there? ๐Ÿค”
  14. Lovely looking Mewlon @orly_andico ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
  15. I love 4โ€ refractors. I have two: Tak FS 102 (getting on for 25 years) and an FC 100DZ. Having said that, the TSA 120 is a step up, yet not that much bulkier that the FS 102.
  16. Brilliant ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
  17. Didnโ€™t they descibe it as โ€œreassuringly expensive โ€œ? ๐Ÿ˜Š
  18. And reported to RSPCT. Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Taks.
  19. Iโ€™ve never needed any filters to control planetary brightness, even with much larger scopes.
  20. Best with the Mewlon Probably the best ever was back in the 70s with a 14-in F/9 Newtonian in the school obsy.
  21. Indeed Jupiter is stunning tonight. I started the evening with 2.5 hours in the dome working variable stars with the C11 and CCD. Transparency was gradually decreasing. So I switched over to the Mewlon. Ive had the Mewlon 210 for just over a year and this has been the best view of Jupiter. Iโ€™ve been following the GRS transit. What a lovely colour and so much detail around it! Could see a few other ovals, including the one @IB20mentioned, plus loads of other swirls in the belts. It doesnโ€™t get much better than this. The best view was with the Ethos 13 (x185). Increasing power with the Apollo 11 or Ethos 10 was not bringing additional detail. By contrast the Ethos 17 was too low power. I also had my first use of the Leica ASPH zoom on the Mewlon. I loved the ability to dial in the magnification. Itโ€™s difficult to know the actual focal length used optimally by it looks about 12mm. I think the Leica could become my stars planetary eyepiece (x135 to x270). The OTA was running with dew, but nothing on the mirrors.
  22. Spot on ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป I am as delighted with my @JOCinspired Stihl electric hedge trimmer as with the Lunt.
