    Starting up

  14. A filaprom is where you have a filament on the disc which runs into a prom on thr limb. Filaments are proms which you are viewing from above. There are lots of descriptive names for proms;arches, hedgerows, loops, trees etc. These names just describe their shape.

  16. To image or not to image...............That is the question
  17. Just to add. Magnification is not the be all and end all of observation. Getting a clear view is much more important. You will seldom be able to use your scope at 260 x. The main factor governing what magnification you can use is the sky conditions. Visibility and transparency will determine the highest usable magnification most of the time.
  18. It’s easy to get a bit impatient when you start out and to want to buy more eyepieces and accessories. The best advice however is to wait until you have gained experience with the eps that are supplied. The 25 mm ep is quite acceptable but the 10 mm, while usable, is no where near as good. Using these eyepieces will give you the experience to decide what further ones you need. Try them out and enjoy your new hobby. Believe me your wallet will take plenty of hits in the future.
  19. Lovely sketch Achim. I wish I had your talent.
  20. Hello and a warm welcome to the SGL. This scope comes highly recommended on this forum and I am sure you have made a good choice. Do not be afraid to ask for help when setting it up. That’s what we are all here for.
  21. Hello and a warm welcome to the SGL. Observing galaxies and nebulae is greatly dependent on the quality of your skies. If you have to travel to get dark skies then obviously ease of transporting the scope has to be considered. I personally would go for a trust tube Dob but to be honest I have not had much experience with an SCT.

  23. Missed this report earlier on. Managed to catch it too.
