  1. I agree Stu I prefer the AZ to EQ or GoTo (although GoTo does has some great convenience factors about it). I leave mine set up with 2 scopes ready to take to the action at a moments notice.
  2. Very nice write up Andy, your comments on peoples favourite targets are very true and were my initial choices. However, This soon changed and both the Sun and the Moon have been my favourite targets for a very long time. I too have often wondered why many folk spend a vast amount of time looking at targets many light years away when we have two beauties in what feels like touching distance at our disposal. Shaun
  3. Great visit to the dark site last night...brrrr it did get very cold, thank heavens for solar observing

Two very nice goodies for not crazy money :) I know shadow method is fine and costs add up, but in the long run the finder works out good value.

      GOOD FOR YOU!!!

  10. The Celestron zoom was one of my first eyepieces and I found it very useful The views through it were also very good.
  11. Dont you just love time off from work :-)

  12. When Gerry says "Tap" he means a clear Canadian water spring with no added fluorides and the water hasn't been recycled in a treatment plant a thousand times.
  13. Bish, The 9mm SLV gives the best solar views, for a fixed length eyepiece by quite a margin, that I have seen in my Lunt 60 and the 6mm SLV gives the best white light views in the 80mm Equinox. I must add I have not used a TV plossl before but I have used the Delos range quite extensively. I don't know yet how my 25mm SLV will work with the Quark but I will find out within the next couple of months

Hoping for improved control with the dual set up :-)

The AZ4 is a bit tricky to balance with both scopes on -- not in the Goldilocks zone as it is.

  15. Pretty much the same here Rob by the time I have remembered my phone number the contract is due, I then normally switch providers and get a new number As for remembering names of stars etc.. that's why I like solar/ lunar observing, its not that easy to forget the name of the sun and Moon.
  16. Rob I hope you can name all of the stars in the picture above, especially after writing such a cracking and comprehensive guide

  19. I find it a very useful tool and more accurate than the others I have tried, sure there has been times when it is completely wrong but we all know the weather can change in an instant For example it has saved me travelling to Coventry today, for the solar event at the Lunt fort, as it forecast cloud cover. I just telephoned my cousin in Coventry for confirmation and she says it is very cloudy Also today in Northants it forecasts clear skies at 9am turning to cloud at 10am, total precision I am more than happy with it.
  20. Michael, Solar Bit of tricky one because I have the option to switch between scopes for white light and Ha due to my dual set up. The Lunt zoom is nearly always present in one of the scopes, I use the 9mm SLV for Ha if I want the best view for longer periods of time. The 6mm SLV is brilliant for white light. slightly better than the 9mm SLV The zoom has 3 main uses - it does both of the above very well and with the 2+ degrees coverage delivered by the Equinox it is great for locating the sun in white light (my set up is purely manual) Lunar / DSO The zoom is almost redundant with the exception of lunar viewing where it performs very well. I use the whole range of SLV's dependant on the target type (my max mag = 200 and max coverage = 2.5 degrees) So in answer to your question the SLV's are my clearly first choice, but the Lunt is a very capable all rounder
