  1. I don't understand how Charles Messier catalogued M66 and M65 and yet failed to spot NGC 3628...while a bit fainter, but it's obviousl!! And...my eyes are hurting from galaxy hunting last night...getting old!!

      Messier was not looking for galaxies, he was looking for comets. His list is items that he catalogued as "Not comets". Also the scope he used was pretty bad, the general opinion was that it reflected about as much light as a 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inch mirror now and the image was pretty poor also. The Messier catalogue is a somewhat strange list of items, all based on not being something else. The Cauldwell catalogue is more appropriate.

      Im aware of that, Ronin. But even with modest optics, you would think if you spot M66 or 97, you are very close to spotting NGC3628...
