Abbreviations, etc.

Recommended Posts

Following a recent discussion, this is a starter list of abbreviations, synonyms, acronyms and nicknames connected with astronomy. The idea is just to indicate what things people often use without thinking signify, so that people unfamiliar with them can look them up on-site.

These are a few terms that came off the top of my head, and they could be updated with external links to sites that explain them in more depth. Feel free to add any suggestions, additions, expansions, corrections.

M.

I was under the impression that DVD means nothing. There's no official definition for it from the DVD consortium and as it's an international abbreviation spanning several languages, the official meaning of DVD is nothing - officially it's just 3 letters.

Before war breaks out over DVD:D:D:D, I think that both options are correct. It is an abbreviation that is commonly used for both options suggested here.

So simply take your choice with whichever one :):icon_scratch: you are most comfortable with.:D:hello2:

I've integrated the suggestions, and added a couple more. I couldn't find what 'CLS' stands for. Please restrict suggestions to astronomy-related, as there are sites online that give lists of more general stuff.

This is a great post for newbies, I think it would make a really handy 'Sticky'

Thought I'd add a few -

M (1 to 110) - Messier Catalogue (by Charles Messier)

NGC 7,840 objects - New General Catalogue (by J.L.E. Dreyer) also includes IC I & IC II - a further 5,326 objects

C (1 to 109) Caldwell Catalogue (by Sir Patrick Moore) (SPM :))

RDF - Red Dot Finder

HTH (which I also thought was 'Hope This Helps')

Cheers
