Maybe somewhere like roundhay park ? Probably not brilliant for light pollution but if we got some place in middle we might get some good shots??

Sheffield here too. I highly recommend the Sheffield Astronomical Society. I went to 4 or 5 meetings as a guest and then joined last month. Last night they had a great talk by David Whitehouse on "Space, The Next 50 years". There is a real mix of people and lots of seasoned astronomers who are happy to help.

Stargazing night this Sat (I can't make it) and another beginners night on the Mon 21st Feb on "Orbits". Check out the website.

Would possibly be up for a smaller gathering of like minds too. I have a couple of dark sites that I have found.

Hi

I went to the Sheffield Society in January and had a chat with some of them. I was amazed that they don't really have an active group of people who actually go and look at the stars! which is what I want. Don't get me wrong, I love the science behind it all, but I really need help with 'how to use my telescope' and 'what to look at' and it just didn't seem that this group of very nice people could offer me that. Hence, asking people on here.

Anyway, hopefully we can start something here and actually go and look up!

Hi Adam

They do have regular star nights and they would be more than happy to give you help with your scope as well as look at some of the ones they have.

I have only managed to get to one star night so far and unfortunately the weather was not so good. We managed about 20mins spread out over about 90 so it was a bit of a let down but hey ho that's how it is with this thing ain't it.

Of course it would be nice if a few of us could get together more regularly and help each other perhaps.

Jimmy.

Had a good night with Sheffield AS on Saturday 12th Feb - the skies stayed relatively clear - lots of observing with a lot of visitors.

Unfortunately, due to their budget cuts, Sheffield council are looking to close the Mayfield building where Sheffield AS are based. If you're a Sheffield resident, please contact your MP, councillors, newspapers, etc. to try and prevent this from happening.

Not too far from Sheffield, nearer to Leeds. But just got back from escorting my son to the Beavers night at the West Yorkshire Astronomical Society at the Rosse Observatory in Carleton Grange Pontefract. My first look at a real telescope, very helpful and welcoming. Apparently they meet on Tuesday nights.

I hope the council don't close the centre. I was up in North Yorkshire at the weekend so couldn't make it. Was very dark skies where I was so got a nice view of some of the

Constellations and saw stars I haven't really spotted before from the relatively bright Sheffield skies.

Hope to get to a meeting soon.

Hi all you Stargazers...I'm a relative beginner in Astronomy and would welcome some active viewing with other enthusiasts. I'd just like to ask someone if I was doing the right things, instead of guessing half the time. There are many more from the Sheffield and surrounding area. Have you seen the South Yorkshire Stargazers Group in the Community section (Social Groups) run by Cheryl (Chez) and Malc?? Pop over and introduce yourselves to the rest of the group...maybe we can arrange a local mini star party for a nights viewing. I would urge caution if you go out at night in remote places...personal safety should be your first concern...Clear skies to you all.

Ok then. When do we want to try and meet. I could do tonight but can't Sat, and as Prof Bright Teeth is on TV Sunday, I might stay in and watch that. Oh, Tuesday and Wednesday are out as I am away, but the rest of the time is fine and even if just a few of us meet we can get the ball rolling.

Anyway, see what people think.
