Flare and prominence, June 9th

A lot of nice activity on the Sun today (June 9th) with a bright flare in AR10960 and a huge prominence on the western limb.

How long does one of the prominences last? I know it is a couple of million miles so I assume its not like a normal 'flare' for a few seconds.

It just depends on the intensity of the flare. Something of the size in Pete's image could last for an hour or more, depending on how violent the initial eruption was. Sometimes they dissipate in a few minutes, sometimes several hours. I'd guess this one was relatively short-lived, since the Sun is quite quiet nowadays.
