I agree with Peter, the AZ4 is a good sturdy mount but I prefer the AZ5 because of the slo mo controls.

Posted this on diy observatories by mistake. I am not very keen on motor focusers that are not able to operate manually so I came up with an idea using a timing belt that could simply be slipped off to allow manual use. One for my Dob and one for my ST120.

I am not in to photography but I am fairly sure that photographic tripods have a 1/4ā fitting and telescope tripods have a 3/8ā fitting. You can obtain adapters for a pound or so which would enable you to use the photographic tripod with your AZ mount.

AZ3 tripod conversion

The AZ3 mount and tripod are not really suitable for using the adaptor you are looking at. The adaptor you are looking at is for use on the steel legged EQ tripod tripod. I have an AZ3 mount and rarely use it because I bought the 3/8" stainless steel tripod which will take most AZ mounts without the need for adaptors and is significantly more solid. -

Assuming that your primary mirrors are clean then you should see a difference between the plossl and the Celestron. Try them at night on a star or planet to get a better idea.
