  1. I was there too! Your pics are much better than mine, but at the eyepiece the views are pretty much the same. Actually, we have the same camera as you at work, for the odd time a huge field of view is needed. Might see if I can borrow it.
  2. I, too, was in the Theophilus - Mare Nectaris region, but a bit later. Seeing for me was pretty good, pushing well over x200 in the Tal.
  3. I'm not an imager at all, but I do often take one or two smartphone pics as a visual companion to my written reports. I was observing the moon last night and took these two, that I'm happy with. The first one is at x166, the second at x264. The CA in the limb and the crater walls looks far worse than at the eyepiece. Unprocessed except for a little crop. Tal RS and Moto G6 Power.
  4. That was a good read, thanks for posting.
  5. Here's my small contribution to this thread, my one and only (so far) Berlebach product. It's in the classifieds, if anyone's interested. I guess I could fit some handles and use it for tea and biccies😄
  6. I had this one some time ago - https://www.rothervalleyoptics.co.uk/baader-t-2-90-amici-prism-bbhs-coated-diagonal.html Definitely not cheap, but very good optically, at least as good as the standard Tak prism diagonal.
  7. That looks lovely, Dave, both the telescope and the mount.
  8. Oops! I would love x1000 from my Tal! Best ever was x375 in the best seeing I've ever experienced. Realistically, it is seeing conditions that will determine maximum practical magnification. On one night it might only be x50, the next could be x500 (unlikely though), so buy your eyepieces accordingly.
  9. Agreed re: CN, but there's not much info about such scopes sold in SA back then. I was hoping there'd be a mention of 1.25" eyepieces in one of those threads... ...like this one https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/196876-yamamoto-3in-f12-refractor/
  10. Could be any of quite a large number of brands, all basically the same but with different names. Yamamoto, Swift, SYW, Royal Tokyo etc, etc. 1.25" would've been quite unusual in 1973, so may be a clue. Loads of info on CN https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/649766-classic-60mm-japanese-refractor/ https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/342860-japanese-telescope/
  11. Looks like lightning in the first one, a tornado in the second. Spectacular!
  12. There isn't much that can be done to the mount unless it's already falling apart. It relies on bushings rather than bearings, so it would take more work than it's worth to improve it. The optics should be decent though, my Prinz 660 (now Skylight) really is superb on the moon, Jupiter, Saturn and double stars, but does need a good mount to bring out the best in it.
  13. The mount isn't great, but I do use it on occasion, usually in AZ mode.
  14. Not just me, then. I took my bins out to a new site, it turned out to be less dark than hoped for. Tried for M81/82, failed miserably. It didn't help that they were close to the zenith (pain in the neck!). Did see a nice meteor though, and satellites. Lots of satellites.
  15. I put my Daystar out for half an hour this morning, seeing not great and a quiet sun, I did spot one tiny spot, 2/3rds out from centre roughly 10 o'clock (refractor view).
  16. Well, if heating may cause damage, and no other option works, you could try cooling it. Pop the adaptor/Lunt in the freezer for a while and try again. Don't know what to suggest if that fails.
  17. Same here, didn't buy anything for four years, see my post above - bought myself a Ha scope!
  18. I've bought only one telescope, one mount, one tripod, and one eyepiece...in the last two months.
  19. Thanks, I am pleased with the views so far. I don't know the difference between solid and air spaced etalons, or why one would be more relaxed than the other, but other than selecting the most appropriate eyepiece, I find it no less relaxing than observing the moon. As with anything new, it's a learning curve, and I'll be learning to walk before running.
  20. They both look nice, but I can't help thinking that there isn't enough difference in focal length between to be worth it. Still interested in hearing your opinion though! I like the little sights they have, would be nice to know if they're any good.
  21. Yes,I had a nice hour observing, the big prom is a bit fainter than the others though. Happy to say that the view in my new Daystar matches those on GONG.
