Huge prominence on the Sun - now 13th March

There is a huge solar prominence at the moment which together with the fairly large sunspot group 1054 makes a great H-alpha view.

I have tried to photograph the prominence and I will post later if it is ok.

Thanks Mark...saw it earlier, it was impressive...didn't get a chance to image though due to having a house full of my daughters friends (4 year olds) now running around...H-A and kids = bad idea :-)

Not the best photo. But this is a quick shot with a compact to give an idea of the size of this prominence - its large!!

I viewed the sun again about 5.00pm and the prominence had almost disappeared. It goes to show that our sun is constantly changing.

I have improved on the previous photo which I will post tomorrow.

Huge prominence on the Sun today (March 16). Not sure if it's the same one as reported on 13th as I missed that . Current appearance suggests similar size. Overall, a large looping arc with beautifully fine filligree cascades towards the solar horizon. Adjacent to the prominence, a large active area surrounding a sizeable black sunspot as viewed in Ha. Several large dark surface filaments also obvious. Observations made with a Skywatcher 100 ED Pro with 80mm ERF, ex PST etalon etc, Denk binoviewers with 40mm Plossls.

Saw this at Keilder too, along with Brian/Solar B and others. Was just like in the above pics. Totally awesome. Am now a convert to the joys of solar viewing. Magical.

Been admiring the prominence all day with my PST. Able to see it quite clearly on the setting sun - it is still large but seems to be more diffuse - possibly about to 'break away"?

When the 'attachments' to the sun's disk have broken it is going to shoot upwards pretty fast <1hr. I watched the 13th one in the late afternoon after some people had put their scopes away! Amazing how fast it can change.
