Hello from Aussie land (don't hold it against me!!!)

Male, 39, currently residing in Brisbane, Queensland. I've long been into Astronomy, never had any quality kit. Experience limited to a cheap 3" Newtonian reflector on an Alt-azimuth mount that my dad bought me when I was 8 or 9. I haven't used it in years. I'm aiming to get some quality kit in the next 12 months and do my fair share of astro imaging ;-)

other hobbies (in no particular order):

Photography: (film & digital, but mostly digital these days). Specialising in macro photography, with some nature photography, landscapes, portraits, birding and motorsports thrown in for variety. You can find my website here, feel free to have a look:

http://www.macro-images.com/

Collecting old & rare books: My prize item is a 1892 4 volume set of Don Quixote.

Collecting Star Wars and Cthulhu mythos collectibles: I have some rather rare, and expensive items ;-) And no, they're not for sale!

Computers: I work in the IT field - IT support for a local ISP. Basically level 1/level 2 support. Do to a promotion, most of my work is now revolving around web/dns/hosted exchange. I'm pretty competent with computer hardware, and fluent in Linux, Windows and OS X. I'm OK with OS 9, freeBSD, Solaris and DOS. I do prefer UNIX or UNIX like operating systems, and I'm a believer in the GNU GPL and FSF (free software foundation) principles and ideals.

Reading: I mostly read sci-fi, fantasy or horror/supernatural. My favourites authors are HP Lovecraft, J.R.R Tolkien, Ursula Le Guin, David Eddings.

Hi Fi: some very expensive kit, probably around AU $30k of gear. Currently not connected due to living with parents and not being able to set said gear up optimally.

That's about it from this lad.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave and welcome - what do you reckin the UK Star Wars poster from the London premier is worth then plus the free borchure they were giving out ? I have two of them in my lock up ?

Are we talking UK 1977 original premiere? If in good condition (and I mean good condition), probably US $5k upwards. Generally speaking, if they weren't placed immediately behind a glass mount, there'll be some degradation in quality (i.e. fading), plus possible issues with moulds etc. A friend of a friend used to collect (mostly) Star Wars posters, he was a developer and could afford to spend insane amounts of money. I'm not that rich ;-)

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, much appreciated. Caught me by surprise to see so many replies!

Cheers,

Dave

G'day Dave, and welcome to SGL,

I have a cousin in Brisbane, another in Melbourne, and a daughter + family in WA. :)

Visit our daughter about once year, staying around six weeks at a time.

Just love the dark skies of WA, and have made some good friends at the local astro society there.

Enjoy SGL, its a great forum.

Hi Dave welcolm to SGL

"Elen sila himenn omentielvo", as a Tolkein fan I'm sure you will understand this High Elvish greeting and significany for us star gazers.

Terry

Actually, no, it eludes me. I suck at Sindarin. Feel free to tell me what it means though! Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks Dave & Dave (it's a small world with all of us Daves here). Where I live has terrible light pollution, as has most cities in Australia. I'd probably have to drive a few hours to evade it all. The best night skies I've ever had were at a tiny farm near Dubbo, in NSW (New South Wales) - it was super dark. Coming out from inside, it took a few minutes for the eyes to dark adapt moderately, and boy...I've never seen so many stars. Even after a few minutes, the small and large magellanic clouds were *easily* visible, I'd say viewing was down to mag 7, maybe 8, it was *that* good. I've never seen anything like it since.

My boy lives down at Spring Mountain and apart from some horizon glow to the north east from Bris the sky is spectacular. Whereabouts are you?

Hi Dave

The translation is " a star shines on the hour of our meeting ".

Ah. Does Glorfindor say that to Aragorn when they meet 3 days out of Rivdendell? Of does Arwen say that to Aragorn @ Rivendell...the only Elvish I can remember is O elbereth Githoniel (not sure on the spelling).

I'm not sure where that is. I'm out at Ipswich. I've only been in Brisbane for 18 months but I don't get out too much due to very bad public transport and no private vehicle...
