What did the postman bring?

A Geoptik padded case for my new Explorer 150PDS, from RVO.

I'm very pleased with it. It's higher than I expected but that just means the scope will go in with the finderscope fitted and with the extension tube in the focuser. It's just the right length for the 150PDS but would probably accommodate something a little bigger in diameter.

And an OVL laser collimator, also from RVO.

The collimation of the 150PDS as delivered was only slightly off. Adjusting the secondary mirror was entertaining as adjusting the three Allen head screws was very hit and miss. More a case of fiddle with them until the laser spot was on the centre of the primary mirror (in the doughnut). The primary mirror was easy to adjust though and I assume this is the one that needs regular adjustment. It seems to be necessary to do the collimation in subdued light so that you can more easily see the laser dot.

I could never have worked out how to do this from the instructions that accompany the collimator but this YouTube tutorial was very helpful, and once I'd wrestled with the secondary mirror adjustment it was just as easy as the tutorial suggests.

I am looking forward to trying it out. What I can say is the build quality is lovely and also very light, I have two impact marks - not caused from rough delivery - but it is only cosmetic and to be expected from a company I suspect is working from a garage or home workshop.

Gosh darn it.... That's... Beautiful!!! Hope it will be worth every single penny:thumbright:

Thanks, I really hope so too! I love the pared-back styling, it looks great, all of the finishing is super high quality - and most importantly it is absolutely solid as a rock. I'm just trying very hard not to think of the cost!

When you extend the legs out, and they lock to further outward travel, do they also lock to inward travel?  I had a play with my tripod this morning and when the legs lock, they only lock to outward travel, which on the one hand makes sense, but on the other seems an odd design choice.

Wow, someone actually managed to purchase one of these... I'm sure you're away of the frenzy that occurred a few weeks back when they launched... crazy 😬

These look really nice and look like a faithful rendition of the originals too... enjoy 😁

Do you mean the angle of the legs at the top? If so, they are locked from further outward movement only. If you mean the leg lock for the height, it's locked in both directions.

Thanks! I spent a lot of time thinking about the right tripod choice and once I'd finally put everything together, it just felt and looked right 🙂

Angle of the legs.

Thanks for the feedback 😀.  Yours is a very nice looking unit I must say.  Much less utilitarian than mine.  Will be interesting to see how we each get on.  Perhaps we should get a Team Carbon Fibre thread going in the mounts section 😂.  There seems to be be very sporadic info on them in.

More than happy to participate in that thread! Might get us kicked off SGL though, I'm already worried that my ambivalence towards Berlebachs is making me no friends 😂

Re leg angle, in my (limited) experience of CF tripods that ratchet-style leg angle lock seems to be quite common. I have a small travel CF tripod from TS-Optics which is the same.

Ah sorry, I never said in my original post. Gitzo 5 series, 4 leg sections. Listed as 40kg payload although perhaps half that for astro/high power, and weighs about 2.8kg itself.
