Sandra, don't let it go - keep at it. You can get reasonable results with quite lowly equipment once you start stacking. My Orion was using the CPC800 with a Canon 550d but imaging can be a money pit. Your images are a great start - much better than my first images. Anyway, I don't do it seriously but just for fun.

My husband goes to work in the early hours and I have always gotten up with him to make his breakfast, so we are early to bed people and very early to rise, was out at 3.30 till 5am.

I saw Orion last night at about 4 am. From my location it is still too low for imaging. A couple of weeks ago I was in the SW Spain on holiday and at about the same time in the morning I could see Orion at about 25 degrees of elevation but with  a slightly different orientation and the great nebula was striking even with naked eye. It was glorious when I got my 15 X 70 Binos it.

Very well done!!!  M42 was the first astroimage I ever took and when this image appeared on the screen I very nearly wept I was so shocked, happy and surprised. Looking back its complete rubbish but I still remember the thrill it brought me and I dont thrill easily!!!  Keep it up - it is very addictive and can be expensive (but doesnt have to be). My astronomy costs me 'nothing' - I spend the money I would have spent on cigarettes if I was still smoking - nearly £9 a day !!!!!!

Well done again.

It's the first image that counts! And your first one is a really nice start to have made.

I've only recently started down the same road.

I don't have a PC, for which most of the freeware programs like DSS are designed - there aren't so many around for the Mac. I hadn't heard of REGIM before seeing Toxic's link (thanks Toxic!), and the other Mac-friendly software I've come across is "Keith's Image Stacker" which is donation-ware, and Nebulosity. The latter isn't free but does look excellent, although I haven't got much further than reading the manual!

Here's a few links that may help:

http://keithwiley.com/software/keithsImageStacker.shtml

http://keithwiley.com/Downloads/Keiths_Image_Stacker_Documentation.pdf

http://www.stark-labs.com/nebulosity.html

And a very helpful review and tutorial on Nebulosity from Astronomy Shed:

Best of luck - take loads more images, and enjoy!

I'd be well pleased to produce an image like that for my first try. Well done.

Unfortunately, since I got my scope on 3rd August I haven't had 1 clear night over here in Thailand. The rainy season will come to an end soon I hope and then I can give it a try.
