Sixpenny Handley Star Party -- NEW for 2012

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I have been toying with the idea of (dis)organising a starparty in my local area for a couple of years now, without success. But now events have conspired, the planets have aligned (maybe), Uranus is rising in my house, etc, etc and, basically, i've got off my backside and done something, ish. So...

Welcome to the first (and possibly last) "Sixpenny Handley Star Party".

It will be held at the very nice Church Farm Campsite in the village of Sixpenny Handley, Wiltshire (www.churchfarmcandcpark.co.uk).

Some of you will know the site already, as another well publisised star party has been held there for the last couple of years.

This isn't a formal affair, no talks or inflatable planetariums, etc, just a pleasant get together with some (lots) of socialising and a bit of stagrazing if we're lucky with the weather. There will be a basic welcome pack with astronomical data, etc for attendees though (I might even do name badges).

The dates are the 10th to 16th of September (Monday to Sunday), It will be possible to arrive on the first Sunday (9th), which is when I'm arriving, if you wish. I suspect most will just want the long weekend (14th -16th). This is also the weekend of another, quite large, star party up t'north. So if us southerners don't fancy the long drive north we now have an alternative.

Bookings will be directly with the the camp site (on 01725 552563), say you're with the star party as I've wangled a small discount for us. I'm not getting involved in the money side of things at all, this saves any money passing through a third party and the hassle that can cause. Numbers are only limited by the site and whoever else may be booked in that week. So get in early.

So there you are. All are welcome. Book direct with the site and PM me when you have so I can keep track of numbers and names of who's coming.

Hope to see you in September....

Mark....

(Post comments etc to this thread and I'll also publish an attendees list here)

We'll be there....in fact, we're going there in a fortnight as we've rented the house out for the summer and will be camping until the end of September

Rob, Amanda and Nelson.

Why draw the line there?

Christmas in a tent could be fun!

Turkey a la Camping Gaz could have Heston Blumenthal looking over his shoulder!

Looking forward to seeing you there, mate! :icon_biggrin:

Looking forward to seeing you and Ian too Lulu

Camping over the winter....I don't think so!!

We were camping last week when the storms came in.....I checked the windspeed afterwards, and can now safely say that a Vango Samara 600 tent will disintegrate nicely in a force 10....it was....interesting

Just remembered! It`s my son`s birthday on the 14th Sept, so unless I can convince him that the star party will be a birthday treat, I`d best be at home that weekend. Although I don`t think I will

get the idea past his sister!

If you've not been to Sixpenny Handley before you'll find there's various of things for kids around there - depending on age of course.

There's Salisbury and the Cathedral for older kids, Go Carts and a Bison Farm for the younger ones. Also Monkey World, but I've heard that is a disappointment. Also it's not too far from the south coast

Thanks chaps.

This as all very encouraging. I was worried for a while that i'd be billy-no-mates sat in my tent all week on me tod.

If you can let me know via PM when you've booked with the site and which days you've booked, I'll add you to my list.

(Marion, if you get stuck en route again this year I'll come out and tow you in...)

Cheers MARK....

And if you're into military stuff, there's Bovingdon tank museum, the biggest collection of tanks etc in the world, right from the first prototypes up to the modern day.
