Hi everyone....please help before I return my new telescope

Hi everyone,

Having decided that using the force wasn't getting us very far we havetaken the plunge and bought our very first telescope !!! We are using this forum as when we were choosing our first telescope there was lots of good advice.....long may this continue. We finally settled on a Skywatcher explorer 130m ( which has been fun setting up ...not !!! ) We rather niavely thought how hard can this be to put it onto a tripod and look at the moon ..... ha ha how wrong can you be sometimes

We have now encountered the next slight problem that someone can hopefully help us with ???? how do you actually store your telescope when you are not using it ? can you purchase carry bags etc ???

Any other useful suggestions will be gratefully received.

both of my scopes live in the lounge.

A lot of people store it in the original packaging provided by the manufacturer.

I use the Geoptik bags but they are not that cheap.

Hello and welcome to SGL firstly.

I just store my scope vertically in the dining room, doesn't take up much room and your's less so.

Just fold your leg's of tripod in and stand next to the scope.

2 children under 10 and an extremely excitable 12 month old cocker spaniel puppy would probably negate that possibility, but thanks anyway lol.

I have the same scope and it sits happily in the dining room for the past couple of years. Been in the background of many family photos and it's there for Xmas dinner. My under 10s know not to touch but the cat has other ideas:)

You can always put the dog and children in the cupboard under the stairs, the scope will be safe then

I have mine stored across two L brackets in my garage, high enough to be safe, but not so high as to be uncomfortable to reach. I padded the L brackets too so it sits comfortable as such.

I keep my Celestron in its original boxes in the spare room, and my refractor sits on its mount in the living room - looks lovely there, but Mrs Marki is less than impressed. Mind you she loves looking at the moon with it, so I guess she's not that annoyed .

Mine's in the garage (keeps it close to ambient temperature), and in the original packaging (with bits cut out so I don't have to take the finder off).

Thank you all for your suggestions.....don't know if we will get away with putting the dog and kids under the stairs and keeping the telescope out but depending on how our first nights family stargazing pans out it might yet be an option

In the shed for mine, it pained me to not be allowed to keep it in the house. It does mean that there is little or no cool down time though and I cant see it coming to any harm.

I keep mine in an unheated garage(short cool down time), stored in a cricket bag, OTA wrapped in bubble wrap.

Welcome to the lounge and thanks for the interesting thread. I was wondering myself how others stored their scopes. Mine looks great in the lounge and thankfully my 7 month old border terrier ignores it.

Hi Obi Wan and welcome to the lounge, an obsy down the garden gets my vote and if the kids get out you could always keep the scope there.
