Hello SGL

Borrowed the kids reflector telescope to look at Jupiter after hearing it was very 'bright' at present. Wow, totally overwhelmed. Never knew you could see so much detail with a cheap piece of kit. Downloaded Stellarium and was recommended this site. All ready to learn about our skies now.

So here I am. Hello Stargazers !

Hi Mr B,

I had no idea when I started that you could see the planets.

Mind-boggling!

If you haven't seen Saturn yet (in the very early hours) then now is your last chance to escape, otherwise I fear you may be hooked!

Mind you, much as Saturn is stunning, Jupiter has been pretty awesome this year!

I hope this new-found hobby will blow you away.

Hi & welcome to SGL

I have yet to see Saturn yet as well and Mars through my scope but the weather & work have been against me at the minute. I do plan on doing an all nighter should the skies be kind to me.

Heh thanks for the warm welcome everyone, I do enjoy 'friendly' forums !

The telescope I am using really is a very cheap beginners / child type. Just the sort that you probably recommend not to waste your money on. Here's the spec:

800-80 Astronomical Telescope

An Ideal starter scope for any budding astronomer, everything required to open up the fantastic world of astronomy and bring the delights of space observation down to earth. Furthermore, the unit is supplied part assembled making the assembly process a breeze.

Specification:

800mm focal length

80mm objective diameter

Focal ratio: F/10

40x Minimum magnification

399x Maximum magnification

Box Contents:

Reflector telescope

6mm, 12.5mm and 20mm eyepieces

Electronic red dot finder scope (battery included)

3x Barlow lens

Aluminium tripod

Altitude slow-motion adjustment bar

Although this is very cheap, it has enabled me to see Jupiter in clear detail along with 4 moons which was absolutely breathtaking, and our moon looks magnificent at present with endless detail to view. So for a cheap telescope I am more than impressed

Will be looking for Saturn soon too !!

We started with a similar Jessops scope. I think we paid £35 for it, the first view of the moon alone was worth the money! And we saw the Andromeda galaxy M31 through it. Great memories!
