Hi everyone,

I'm a complete beginner in this but have been an avid sky watching dog walker for years. I find it so relaxing to stand under a clear sky, looking out into the vastness of space and wondering "how?" and "what's that?".

Coming across this forum has been great. The advice, guidance and enthusiasm you all bring has confirmed for me that this is the hobby and place for me.

As a newbie I've read through a number of the threads for beginners . I'm going to start off with Bino's, I've downloaded Stellarium and I'm about to order (after permission from the missus and my bank manager, both the same person) "turn left at Orion) and "Illustrated Guide to Astronomical Wonders" . I've also arranged a visit to the Edinburgh Royal Observatory for a starter course and really, really looking forward to it. It isn't until the 14th Oct but I believe that is when we might just maybe get our next cloud free evening.

So that's me. Thanks again for the friendly and informative forum you have all created and I look forward to getting to know you better.

As an aside I've just finished watching a documentary about the moon and how it is slowly but surely leaving Earth's orbit. It discussed how this would lead to the destruction of life on this planet and in how many ways. After aprox 55 mins it dropped the bombshell that before it gets the chance to leave Earth's orbit completely that the sun would probably have burnt us to a crisp in its own death throws anyway. I may have missed the point to the documentary.
