Finally upgraded after 2yrs :)

Recommended Posts

Yep can't hold it in any longer lol

(need to ask some questions aswell)

i have upgraded my 127mm Mak having bought it in May 2009,

i have been tempted by DSLR cameras, dmk's, cooled ccd's, meade dsi's, PST's and solarmax's,

minitron and samsung video cameras various equipment such as TV ep's, filters, various scopes etc

and looks like i still need most of above, as have blown my budget entirely on new scope and mount,

i considered the following scopes

8" OO newt 1/10pv on NEQ6 = £1700

SW 180 pro mak NEQ6 = £1700

CPC800 = £1550

C9 xlt (cg5)with possibly new DFK 618 camera = £1825

C11xlt (cg5) = £1800

300p SW flex goto DoB with DFK camera = £1650

350p SW flex goto Dob = £1700

last monday when checking prices the C11 xlt had been reduced to price that was just right for me to spend all my savings

http://www.harrisontelescopes.co.uk/acatalog/Celestron_Advanced_C11_SGT_XLT_Telescope.html#a11067XLT

so on Wednesday last week i phoned for chat and to order,

i was told they couldn't say if it was fastar compatible or not so i took a gamble on that and decided it was worth it anyway

received counterweights on Sat and got other Main 2 boxes on Monday this week

haven't managed to set scope up yet but took a few snaps of what came in main box, and also found i got lucky getting fastar model

interesting scope says 279mm 11" on front yet celestron website has it as 280mm and 11.02"

so not sure if i have 279mm or 280mm scope ?

also comes with 1.25 visual back and 1.25 diagonal and 1.25 40mm E lux EP,

from what i can see this is same as Omni series ?

also has a better 50mm finder with fancy holder :)

heres few pics

I'll be more than interested to know your thoughts, considering I'm looking at the same thing! That looks gorgeous, so big, and big, and shiny, and big! :):p:rolleyes:

Ok, going to add some tips thoughts experience here with new C11 CG5 combo

1st setting up everything should be done as per instructions with mount EXCEPT

when attaching eq mount head to tripod plate it is best to reposition the aligment peg so that it is over a tripod leg rather than inbetween legs,

this can be done very easily as there is already a hole waiting, and will make big difference in mount stability when attaching ota

2nd tip is regarding the hand controller and i wasted at least an hr's viewing time here, as i thought i had entered date or long lat wrong,

once u have entered details BEFORE attempting alignment

find the tracking mode menu, and select EQ North

as default is South or it was on mine so make sure u check :)

Looks XLNT James !

Can't begin to imagine what it must be like for you to swap a 127 upto an 11" !! Awesome I should think !

Can't wait for my 1st light too but have injured my hand ( stitches jobby) so carrying until next week :)

Yeh thx Karlo

1st light was a great experience just viewing,

the extra light really shows, bear in mind the mak is the only scope i've ever looked thru :)

had scope out four times now since i got it,

and only had one half decent imaging session so far, due to clouds and rain showers

the mak is a belter of a scope and i still haven't parted with it YET lol

everything is bigger and better in new scope altho

viewing my fav double Albireo was a bit of a surprise, yes the starfield was amazing in 11" SCT, much fainter stars can be seen obviously

but Albireo in the 5" Mak is much deeper colours and i can now understand why other more experienced viewers have said the same,

the mak gives Great contrast which is ideal for Double stars like Albireo, makes u wonder how it would look in a real quality instrument like a Tak :(

the maks fov was 0.6 with 25mm ep and gave 60x mag(enuf for full moon)

the C11 fov with 40mm ep is more or less exactly same only gives x70 mag

M27 in mak was bairly noticeable most nights,

C11 view was unbeliable compared to mak

i really was mesmorised as i was when i gawped at Jupiter for 1st time, much easier to notice details at less high mag and Jupiter was much brighter

M27, M31 again like above magnificent compared to Mak

just wish weather would improve at least a bit

everyone who upgrades prob thinks is it worth it, and i can say in my case Yes definetly it is a scope i will own for number of years,

set up and take down is bit longer, but i was expecting that anyway

maybe oneday i can get obs or skyshed or skypod thing lovl

for the price i paid i feel i have picked up another bargain

just like i did with my beloved mak :D

u must be itching to get started with urs aswell ?

look forward to hearing what u think to views compared to ur mak aswell

Wow new C11 owners coming in by the bus load today

We may now have enough to start a C11 group

By the bus load? Hey! I walked! :) All together now, 'We're all going on a summer holiday!' :(

A group would be cool. Could we be the big cat appreciation society?! Moto: BCAS we like 'em large! :D

Not jealous, not even slightly nuh uh, not me.

That sir is a gorgeous telescope, I want one now, but not sure i can quite justify £1700 (well not with the gf reading this over my shoulder) :(

Suggest that it'll help you see the twinkle in her eye when you're apart! That you'll be able to search the heavens to see where she fell from! Etc... chicks dig that kind of stuff, apparently! :)

Love that, definitely worth a go! :D I'll report back if it works or not.

Good luck! :)

Incidently, fellow C11 users, I have set-up a group for us, although, at present it is simply called C, as I couldn't enter more than one letter in the name field! :(

Let's get together and share our experiences! :)

How is the focuser on yours James for a SCT re shift i know some are better than others

Kevin

hey Kevin,

focusser is something i will def upgrade in future,

its not as bad as i thought tho,

also if u get critical focus by turning anticlockwise it helps, and less likely to shift

i will prob get baader steeltrack, or more expensive moonlite

which has better shaft lock to prevent shift

not sure ? if u could use them on ur CPC Mount tho due to clearance needed when viewing/imaging objects near zenith,

so u might need to go for feathertouch if ur looking to upgrade it ?

James
