Absolute Beginner With Confusing “Stuff”.
bosun21 replied to Mikel56's topic in Getting Started Equipment Help and Advice
I couldn’t believe it when I saw the price you got them for, I think I may even had shed a tear😂. The fact that the 9.25” is unused is a win on top of the win you already got. If you don’t know your way around the sky then you will have trouble finding targets with the 9.25” due to its long focal length. The 9.25” is an excellent scope and deserves a quality mount to allow it to shine. Good luck with your new hobby. -
Decided to cheer myself up with all the poor weather about. My scopes are a 4” Starfield and a 12” dobsonian so I decided to get something in between that wasn’t expensive as I’m busy saving for a larger refractor. I had a spare EQ5 so I had DPD deliver a 150PL for when the weather doesn’t merit setting up the 12”. All collimated and ready for its first light.

Astrophotography and budget
bosun21 replied to Dannomiss's topic in Getting Started Equipment Help and Advice
Yes it's a great little scope for the planets, moon and some small bright DSO's. It's also a go to so it will help him find targets as he probably doesn't yet know his way around the sky. It's also got tracking so will keep the targets in the eyepiece negating having to constantly move the telescope. Regards photography he can buy a phone mount and use his phone to snap pictures of the targets. Further down the road he could also buy a planetary camera and take short videos of the planets and stack them into a respectable image. It would definitely keep him busy for a long time. -
Great for a single sub. It's looking good for future captures.

200mm Manual Dobsonian. SkyWatcher or StellaLyra
bosun21 replied to Lurcher's topic in Discussions - Scopes / Whole setups
All you need to do is fit a washer between the secondary holder and adjustment screws. I did this mod to both my 8” and 12” SL dobsonians. -
200mm Manual Dobsonian. SkyWatcher or StellaLyra
bosun21 replied to Lurcher's topic in Discussions - Scopes / Whole setups
My 12" Stella Lyra dobsonian base is approx 600mm the same as yours. Regarding the 200mm choice I have owned both and the Stella Lyra is a no brainer for me. The dual speed focuser, RACI and the smooth roller bearing azimuth movement more than makes up the £100 difference you can get by snagging the return from FLO. -
What aperture to see spiral arms in galaxies?
bosun21 replied to Jim Smith's topic in Getting Started With Observing
I have managed to see indications of the spiral arms with averted vision with an 8” dobsonian in bortle 5-6 skies. I can see them more clearly in my 12” on nights of very good seeing and transparency. I also found that a black sheet of fabric draped over my head eliminating all traces of stray light and being totally dark adapted is a must. The longer time spent observing at the eyepiece also helps draw out faint details. -
Unfortunately I’m still learning this lesson to the dismay of my wallet 😔.

Just delivered is an Astronomik OIII filter to replace the one I dropped onto concrete paving slabs and cracked🙄. Also a pair of 18mm BCO’s to try in my MBII’s

(UPDATED) First AND SECOND Saturn of the year (added post below)

Lovely image👍. I also like the fact that you layered in the moon's. -
I owned a SvBony 7-21mm zoom eyepiece and found it provided clear reasonably sharp images. I didn't like the somewhat narrow FOV at the lower magnification end and sold it. It never occurred to me to keep it as a planetary eyepiece. Reading through the link you provided has left me feeling pleased that I opted to go for my set of Baader Morpheus eyepieces.

Terrans Industry Onstep kit for EQ5
bosun21 replied to AndrewRrrrrr's topic in Member Equipment Reviews
I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on with this kit. I have a new synscan go to EQ5 as well as one that only has the motor drive kit. This would be a great upgrade for the later. It's considerably cheaper as well. -
Hi 👋, welcome to SGL.

I can second the roller bearing that Mr Spock detailed previously. Once lubricated it's extremely smooth throughout. I have the same scope as him with the centre tensioner screw.

A sign of the times I reckon.

Good luck with the cloud gods during your vacation 🤞.

Haha 😂 I had this same setup with my previous Starfield as well. Works great for me.

Help connecting to ASIair Plus on iPad.

It was just when you said you managed to connect your camera but not the mount. Just a thought. I hope you find a resolution to this. -

Did you check that the baud rate is set correctly. Just a thought. -
Praying for joyful clear skies.

You ideally need to use the starsense on an Alt/Az mount. I tried it on my EQ mount and i couldn’t contort myself enough to even see if it was working not being on the level. I hastily abandoned the idea and put it back on my dobsonian.
