  1. It’s official my Lenovo is intermittently expiring and in doing so corrupting the operating system. It is time for it to fade into the cloud. I’m hoping the recently acquired video clips of Syrtis Major can be saved.

  2. Tottering start to imaging in 2023. Managed to get some video of Mars in between the clouds. Unusually all my kit performed faultlessly. Then when I brought my laptop into the house it stuttered and appeared to expire. It has seemingly died before only to be revived by the local IT legend Robin. It is with him as I type!

  3. Very nice image and I think you have Lowestoft in the background. George
  4. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Observing and Imaging Year to all at FLO and Stargazers every where. Thanks for all the help, likes, laughs and kind comments you have sent to me over the last 12 months. Mrs H has asked me to add her best wishes to you all.

  5. Very nice image. I don't recall the isthmus either. I always assumed the darker areas were exposed bed rock or boulder fields whilst the lighter areas were sandy and the changes were due to winds blowing the fine sand around. I am probably wrong but a working hypothesis. Regards from George currently in Sheffield.
  6. Thanks Reggie. Mrs H and I are well. She is recovering well from her knee and hip replacement surgery and we are out an about again, currently visiting an old friend in Sheffield. Hope you are keeping well and ready for a very Merry Christmas. Best regards from George and Anita.
  7. An interesting issue for AI that I had never considered. My son several Christmas ago made us an ‘Oracle’ portal. Essentially a Raspberry pi with display sampling our internet Wi-Fi feed and presenting snippets of news on the wall behind our breakfast table. When he originally programmed it there was no limitation on the date the item was published, so now we get a mixture of contemporary and ancient news. It’s a bit like having a wall mounted time machine with disgraced politicians reinstated and the dead resurrected. We have old favourites which we look forward to seeing displayed in between current events. Time is slippery stuff and seemingly information once published by the news media lasts forever. The internet randomly sampled is tantamount to looking through Alice’s Looking Glass.😂 George
  8. From the album: Mars

The weather was a bit mixed in Lowestoft in the early hours of 09-12-2022, so in the end was pleased to get any sort of image of Mars. Stack of 9000 frames taken with my 127mm Meade APo refractor and my aged QHY5L-IIc planetary camera. Looking at my data I assume there was quite a lot of cloud about on the Martian disc. On the other hand, could be artifacts of my clumsy processing.
  9. Just got in from the backyard after a ‘cold night’ imaging a wobbly Mars. Had an unexpected shower of something similar to fine snow and a low of -4C. I’m getting too old for this malarkey in winter. Now on an intravenous Horlicks drip courtesy of Mrs H.

  10. Excellent as ever. Beautifully done!
  11. Absolutely lovely images, nicely processed. Thanks for posting. George

    Mars Best crop

Thank you for the kind comment. I find processing Mars tricky. If you over do the sharpening or the red channel, the image looks unreal. I think I over emphasized the red at the expense of green in this image. Yes I agree, thin high cloud and or the jet stream over head and you might as well pack up for the night with Mars. This year Mars is quite small and with a 3x Barlow my 5 inch refractor struggles to resolve fine detail. I'm getting on a bit and my eye sight makes focussing ever more difficult even with all the hardware and software aids. Still I refuse to give up but I must admit the cold and damp nights are a tad discouraging. Best regards from George in a windy Lowestoft.

    From the album: Mars

The early hours of the 1st Dec 2022 has provided the best opportunity to date for me to use my 127mm Meade Apo to image Mars from Lowestoft this season. This image is a 25% stack from 5000 frames captured with my venerable QHY5-llcolour camera. Not the best of nights being both cold and damp. Surprised how much smaller Mars is from two years ago. Pleased to just about see both ice caps and Olympus Mons. Used PIPP, AS3!, Registax6, Affinity2, Topaz Denoise AI and FitsWork4.
  14. A very beautiful, as well as interesting image - so much going on.

Last night was like the Hokey-Cokey, I got my big scope out , rain, in -out and eventually I gave up on Mars. Then it morphed into a beautiful clear night with intermittent cloud. I captured a number of 30 sec lights at ISO 1600 with my astro-modded 200d DSLR and Sigma EX zoom lens at f=11mm. Camera mounted on a Star Adventurer. Images stacked and processed using Affinity Photo 2 which Mrs H purchased for my Birthday. Very pleased with it and much more stable than the original Affinity Photo software which I have been using for about a year.
  16. Thank you for your kind comment. George

New photon alert. One unexpected clear night (14-11-2022) after a poor start. So took off my pyjamas and slipped into an anorak. Mars and Uranus in one star field with Orion and a waning gibbous Moon behind the hedge. Stack of 15 sec lights at ISO1600. 600d Canon DSLR with Sigma EX zoom lens at f=10mm. Stacked and cropped using Sequator, Afinity Photo2, Topaz Denoise AI and Fitswork 4.

Weather in Lowestoft dreadful, choosing not to build an Ark, I decided to remix some data found from summers past. Originally data captured using a fixed tripod mounted 400d Canon DSLR and standard 18-55mm lens at f=18mm. Re-processed and cropped using StarnetGUI and Affinity Photo.
  21. Generally lucky in Lowestoft as Suffolk County Council turns off the LED lamp outside my house at 11.30pm. Also helps that it is on a short pole on the North side of my house which blocks light from it spilling onto my backyard. On balance I prefer the use of well designed, installed and controlled LED lighting but remain concerned regarding it’s impact on moths and bats, both of which have declined locally. A new shorter pole has appeared next to the first. I’m hoping it’s for a non-illuminated information sign, the one with the two old age pensioners with walking sticks.🤣 George
  22. Thank you Peter I will send the link to my daughter and probably read the pdf myself, looks interesting. Best regards George
