  1. Thank you for your post I will forward the link to my daughter. Many thanks George
  2. Beautiful image, pity I cannot see this from 52 degrees North!
  3. A few  rather beautiful rockets of the more terrestrial kind over Lowestoft tonight also a very pretty Jupiter Moon conjunction. Took  few stills with my Canon 600d and a zoom lens (f between 200 and 300mm). Messed about with the images to bring out Jupiter's moons Callisto and Ganymede. Io and Europa were lost in the glare from Jupiter. Our Moon was waxing gibbous with the terminator highlighting the 'Bay of Rainbows'. All very lovely and even a few clouds couldn't spoil the view.

    Best Antares 2022

    From the album: Backyard Astronomy

The weather continues 'grot' over Lowestoft so I'm still playing about with StarnetGUI etc. using old data. This handheld image with a modded and unmodded DSLR cropped and 'deconvolved a lot' turned out very colourful and nebulous. Just how I like them!
  5. From the album: Backyard Astronomy

Had a happy half-hour reprocessing some old data of the Eastern Veil Nebula using the excellent StarnetGUI freeware and Affinity Photo. Much more Ha nebulosity and calmer stars. Plus I'm a sucker for technicolor!
  6. Beautiful sunset and new Moon over Cambridgeshire tonight.042CF85B-2FA4-4C07-BFF6-EB049B901405.thumb.jpeg.b37a7e7d5188dec339634284e44aab1d.jpeg

  7. My daughter Alice is keen to take some night scape photos from rural Oxfordshire. She wondered if there is a good app she could download for capturing starry skies with her phone? Many thanks in anticipation. George

    Last Contact

    From the album: The Sun

Managed to catch the last hurrah of the eclipse as the Moon moved awsay from infront of the Sun's disc. The addition of a x3 Barlow really pushed the sky conditions, my mini rig set up and Altair Astro 66mm Doublet Refractor to the limit.
  9. From the album: The Sun

Taken with my Sky Adventurer mini-rig. Altair Astro 66mm Doublet Refractor, homemade white light filter and QHY5-llc camera. Stacked and processed using PIPP, AS!3, Affinity Photo and Topaz Denoise. A few sunspots and eclipse at approx maximum. Very hazy sky with lots of high and medium level cloud.
  10. Our daughter and three of our grandchildren are with us for half term so was able to show them the partial solar eclipse safely from our backyard. Lots of medium and high level clouds about over Lowestoft this morning, so images up to my usual blurry standard. Will post a couple of the least worst tomorrow.

Was also coerced into buying lunch from Burger King. The veggie burger was tasty and better than I had envisaged but by teatime I was suffering from spleeny 'burger regret'.

George recovering in bed in Lowestoft.

  11. Welcome back and hope your recovery goes well. Mrs H has had both her hip and knee replaced this year and recovery particularly from the knee op has been slow and painful but she is getting there and pleased to have got both done. Best regards George
  12. Thank you for your kind comment. I always think images near the terminator create a feeling that you have got nearer rather than enlarged the view. George
  13. Bit hazy but taken with my 127mm refractor whilst waiting for Jupiter.
  14. From the album: Backyard Astronomy

The Lynx, Gemini and Auriga - old data captured with an astro- modded DSLR and HaO3 Dual filter. Reprocessed with the benefit of StarnetGUI and improved star processing.

    Bay of Rainbows

    From the album: The Moon

Sinus Iridum with the crater Harpalus just cleared by the terminator. Decided to image this after reading 'Moonwatch' in the Sky at Night magazine. 127mm. Meade Series 500 apo refractor with 3x Televue Barlow and QHY5-llc planetary camera.
  16. It's odd how every now and then even an absolute Muppet like me has a moment of revelation! I have been merrily separating stars from nebulous stuff, processing each bit and then recombining them using 'screen' blend mode for longer than you can say Professor Ian Morison. Unfortunately, I have always been troubled by the softness of my stars.  Then today it suddenly occurred to me  I should be 'screen' blending the nebula into the stars and not the other way around. Tried it and lo' and behold the stars are much sharper and the nebula more nebulous! Who would have thought it? What a complete numpty!!

    Jupiter Best

    From the album: Jupiter

October 2020 Jupiter and a much reduced and colour muted GRS. 127mm Meade Apo Series 500 refractor, x3 Televue Barlow and QHY5-llc planetary camera. Best 15% of 12000 Avi frames. PIPP, AS3!, Registax6, AffinityPhoto and Topaz Denoise AI.
  18. Jupiter with the GRS and Europa and Io. There was a significant amount of hazy high level cloud over Lowestoft the night (6th October 2022) I captured the video clips for this composite image. The Moon was also waxing gibbous. The videos were captured with my 5 inch Meade 500 Series Apo Refractor from our Backyard in Oulton Broad Lowestoft Suffolk (Lat 52deg28min north) using 3x and 2.5 Barlows and my colour QHY5-ll planetary camera. The image was stacked from a total of 13000 video frames. Data processed using PIPP, AutoStakkert3, Registax6, AffinityPhoto, FitsWork4 and DenoiseAI.
  19. Our friend Irene sent me a photo of a Falcon 9 taking off from the Cape as captured by her brother Jeff Payne from the balcony of his flat on Bermuda.1814ED5A-D0EB-492B-8A5F-466BDEAFB4FD.jpeg.a404ac53d4da192351d4c1c8e8070d1f.jpeg

  20. Argh! I believe my Lenovo 'workhorse' laptop just died.

    George now irritable in Lowestoft.

  21. From the album: The Sun

Trying out my newly constructed white light filters on 127mm. Meade 500 series Apo Refractor, 3x Barlow Lens and QHY5ll mono planetary camera. Image processed using PIPP, AS3!, Affinity Photo, Fitswork4and Topaz Denoise AI.
  22. Just packed up after imaging Jupiter. My first go for this year.  All a bit 'wobbly-wobbly' tonight over Lowestoft. So I'm not expecting the data to be very good. My kit all worked reasonably well so must not grumble.

George in Lowestoft and now in bed.

    Y2YYYY_3B

    From the album: Backyard Astronomy

Re worked data from Canon 600d and modded 200d to increase depth and decrease number of stars. First try out of GraXpert and StarnetGUI in combination with all the old software culprits . Recent articles in Sky at Night and Astronomy Now very useful. I know this is a bit 'technicolor' but I'm quite pleased with it.
