  1. Yes I have the Kindle versions but got them a long time ago. Burnhams is anyway over rated and a cult book amongst certain parts of the US community rather than anything useful today.
  2. I think as one of the vendors there I can say that the turnout was very poor. Friday was almost dead, certainly the afternoon. Saturday was better but the number of vendors was down and the turnout from people attending was well down on previous years which was disappointing given the three year break. Whether this is due to the economic situation or the lingering issues with Covid I don't know. Certainly given this I doubt we would attend next year if it occurs. At least compared to PAS which was entirely an imaging event there was a wider range of kit to see.
  3. note that the seeing at the Parador is quite bad because the lava heats up during the day and releases that heat at night so if you think you are going to be doing planetary work then it might not be so good.
  4. as the editor of DSO and president of the Webb Soc am interested to know in what way you think the magazine has drifted. In general I can only publish what I get and we have never tried to be a beginners magazine, there are plenty of those. We have never tried to include imaging article, unless they are part of a project.
  5. Surely that should be a picture of the clouds, gales and rain that are more typical at a Kelling star party 😀
  6. The problem is if the technology works that there will be many of these satellites and the production ones have even larger attenna.
  7. I susp[ect that the Autumn Kelling here in the UK will not be far off the size with 800 or so astronomers turning up. Interesting to see so many tents. The aging population here means there are more caravans and motorhomes than tents at Kelling. Unfortunately the detierioating skies means the larger telescopes don't come any more..

    Hi from Oxfordshire

Abingdon AS is still Abingdon AS as it has been for the last 20 years or more. It used to be Fitzharrys. The other AS in Oxfordshire is Chipping Norton in the north of the county. Abingdon is a very friendly society and starts its meetings again in September after the summer break.

If you want to know what you will be seeing pictures of read this https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/07/nasa-names-first-five-targets-for-webb-images/
  10. Unfortunately most of the new features seem focused on social media. The hoped for DSO database upgrades did not make it and are not even in the iOS 7.1 in beta test which is very disapointing. They keep promising this sometime in the future.
  11. I think you need to consider things like Electric Hookup as many people are imagers nowadays. Also amentities like toilets/showers if it will be a multi day event. It will be useful to liase with the owners of any campsite about whether they will turn off any lights. Whether you allows pets/children may also be an issue. It may also depend on the country. Here in the UK the astronomy population is aging so most have caravans/camper vans, very few now camp. Often best to work with an established site rather than trying a local farmers field. People do travel to star parties abroad if they think they will get good skies. I myself have been to TSP a number of times as well as the WSP in the US. Unfortunately I doubt that Norway will have the requsite good skies 🙂
  12. i think you are getting confused with the La Palma observatories on a different island. The Teide observatories are on Tenereife and are msotly small telescopes devoted to the Sun..
  13. I get the same thing. It was working fine a few days ago so I suspect some form of IT problems. I guess keep trying in a couple of days. If you have not downloaded the magazines they are very large, of the order of 200Mb.
  14. people have been struggling to find it since perihelion. There are some possibleimages but it is much fainter than hoped.
  15. After a two year hiatus the Webb Society is holding its annual meeting at the IOA in Cambridge on the 18th June. Details can be found at www.webbdeepsky.com. The list of speakers is bing finalised as we speak.
  16. Possibly that Dwarf galaxies contain dark matter whereas Globular clusters don't, however this may be a grey area as well as a number of galaxies have been discovered which apparently don't contain dark matter.
  17. I thought the show was interesting as it pretty much totally focused on imaging. There was very little there for the visual astronomer. An indication unfortunately of the way our hobby is going.
  18. Yes it is happening. If you can't find details ring them or e-mail them. The dates are 28th March to 4th April and in general astronomers will be in the red and yellow fields.
  19. Hopefully not. It has been poor for years now..
  20. I suspect that as this is the first one that Kelling themselves are organising they are still trying to get all their ducks in a row.
  21. Does anybody know if this show is still on as we are only 8 weeks or so away and there seems to be silence on their web and FB pages?
  22. I understand thtatbecause of global supply issues there are now shortages of most eyepices in the market. so yes the prices are going to go up[ .
  23. You probably need to find out what generation filter it is as Lumicon have been very up and down in terms of quality over the last few years.. Also note it is a 2"
  24. note this star party is now managed by Kelling themselves so I guess that is where information will be. Most people I suspect will have been rolled over twice now.
  25. I think it may depend on what information you are looking for. As noted already the Autumn star party is run by Loughton AS. The running of the Spring one is now being taken over by Kelling themselves. It is also true that the campsite is almost certainly fully booked for the Autumn star party so just turning up in hope may not work. I understand that most of the campsites in that area are pretty much fully booked through the end of November. As for the star party the main changes this year is that there will be no talks due to Covid issues. The vendor row will be there on the main Saturday as usual. I don't believe FLO ever go to shows and this one would be too far for them anyway. I believe the raffle will take place. I am not sure if the telecope tour will be taking place either due to Covid. The other changes may well be that people will be unlikely to allow viewing through their scopes, again due to Covid precautions. People will be able to visit during the day by parking in the parking lot and looking around.. As for the weather moving the star aprty to October to allow Kelling to make the most of the Forties weekend in September may well mean that the chances of decent weather will disappear. I do wonder for the future of the star party thanks to this move. remeber the Autumn star party is one of the largets in the world with maybe 700 people there and people tend to cluster in their own groups.
