Be kind, its my first!
davew replied to Rustang's topic in Imaging - Widefield, Special Events and Comets
There aren't many using 50mm lenses on a static tripod because it's actually quite difficult to get a decent shots like yours. I can't wait to see the SA shots now ! 😎 Dave. -
Milky Way over abandoned farm...

Just the right amount of light coming from the windows and a lovely mysterious field beyond. I think the 24mm lens was an inspired choice as any wider wouldn't have looked so good, to my eye at least. Dave. -

A real attention grabber that's so well done. Great stuff, Dave. -
Nice camera. As you'll know there's an APSC setting in the menu so all lenses will do fine. Dave.

Hi Ian. There are two Samyang lenses that will fit Nikons in the 14mm size but no 12mm lenses that I'm aware of. There is a 10mm to fit Nikon. The 14mm f2.8 is a fairly good lens overall if you get a good one. Plenty of nice Astrolandscapes taken with it. The 14 f2.4 is reputedly a step up but I've not seen many images but those I have seen look very good. The 12mm doesn't fit Nikon F or Canon EOS I don't think ( If someone knows better I hope they say ) but the 10mm and 16mm are touted as a good lenses but I've no idea if that's true I'm afraid. The Samyang 24mm gets high praise but that's nowhere near as wide and once again I've not seen that many images taken with it. The lenses that fit Nikon F are the same as Canon EOS so you can hope a Canon owner who has one can let you know, Dave. PS. You didn't say which Nikon.

Just in case he doesn't see the post, Daniel has some other videos here that may well help - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm50WzpT1YKCwghW13b6k-g Dave.

Just enough gaps appeared in the sky on the night of the 12th to get some imaging done. I went up on Over Owler Tor, near Hathersage, and was met by a sea of people but luckily all but a few left after their dramatic sunset shots were taken. I set the Nikon Z6 camera going at 14mm f1.8, ISO 800 and 20 seconds and bagged a mere 482 for the sky and 8 for the ground ! 482 is quite a few to look through when you're trying to find faint streaks ! In all I found just 9 with Meteors and not all of them are Perseids I'm sure. I only used 2 ground shots f4, ISO 800 for 10 seconds illuminated by a small torch. Processed in Photoshop and Lightroom using masking and layers and you can just make out some colour on a few of the longer streaks . As a byproduct of so many shots I got a dramatic timelapse but it was spoilt a bit by so much torchlight in the area. For those interested, and I know a few are, I consumed 2 plain chocolate Bounties and 2 flasks of coffee. No crisps, I'm on a diet 😇 Dave

The Roller...
davew replied to clarkpm4242's topic in Imaging - Widefield, Special Events and Comets
I think I'd be best served looking for a proper light from what you say. I have side lighting pretty much as I like it but feel a brighter light will be needed. I managed to get out for quite a few hours on the night of the 12th, as did coach loads of others ! I'll get the image up later in the meteor section so hope to see you there, Dave. -
Cloudy Perseid time lapse

I agree it's a good idea to pause on a meteor. I can't remember seeing that done before. Nice, Dave. -

Very neat backlighting. I've never managed anything that I'm pleased with but I must try again as you've shown it can be done. Dave. -
SGL 2021 Challenge 4 - Noctilucent Cloud

The standard of entries for this challenge was outstanding. Both stills and videos were amongst the most enjoyable I've seen. Well done all winners and cheers once again to Martin. Dave. -
Milky Way arch over the Mump

I can't say I've ever tried Autostitch but I may download it and have a go. I usually use ICE or Lightroom but I think Microsoft have removed ICE from their server so it's a good job I have a copy of it somewhere or other. Yep, the lights do have a soft effect and certainly illuminate a large area better than my mini torch ! I have been told to put my hand in my pocket and get some proper lights like yours ! Dave -
I was imagining you setting the light, walk back to the camera, take a photo, check the back screen, move the light, walk back to the camera and repeat. I've also been trying to imagine what you'd do at Old Gang. You'd need a few shots stacked in PS that's for sure. Love the timelapse ending on your video. Dave.

Milky Way arch over the Mump
davew replied to Zummerzet_Leveller's topic in Imaging - Widefield, Special Events and Comets
Wow. Everything about that image has worked well hasn't it ? I like the internal lighting and the outside hasn't got any stripes at all. Unlike some of mine ! Very nice pano whether it's your first or not. It looks like you've got it nailed. Dave. -
I think a bit more info would be good, like which camera, lenses and what filters. Also in these current times I'd make an approach to your favorite retailer and see what they can get. Dave

Hi Agnes, I'll admit straight off that I know nothing about the M100 so will leave that. I've also never used the Sony A6000 🤔 However I have an RX100 that works and looks very much like the A6000 which seems to be just a larger version with buttons you can actually press ! I looked around on YouTube and to be honest I found little of interest by anyone I knew of except ... Ian Norman. I've read stuff he's written on and off for a few years and would trust his judgment. He's written a review here - https://www.lonelyspeck.com/sony-a6000-astrophotography-review/ If you can ignore everything you hear about the menu system and the star eater ( It seems to affect people who can keep a star on the same pixel for minutes on end ) then you should be ok. I like the Fn button that the A6000 has as you can press just the one button and it brings up the setting you can set up and change. Sony do seem to gouge money out of people with having to pay for the Timelapse app but it's worth it as far as I'm concerned. Just like many Nikons, which get it for free, you can ramp the exposures automatically ( ie. day to night timelapses etc ) and that alone got me to spend the extra. Another reviewer I would listen to is Nasim Mansurov and his general review is here - https://photographylife.com/reviews/sony-a6000 Good luck 🙂 Dave.

Oh wow. Thanks Martin and all the mods for the votes. I had my own private vote at home and didn't make the top three ! I was particularly taken with all the colours everyone has managed capture. Cheers, Dave.
