  1. Hi, Welcome to SGL. Glad you fixed your binos, so all ready to go. Look forward to your thoughts and observations !
  2. There you go Dave, happy to oblige, but Andromeda in a Vixen thread....is that allowed ? Sorry about the eyepiece caps on the 16.8 Ortho's , that's all I can afford...
  3. Excellent set of Ortho's ! I still have my UOVT Orthos in pairs at 18mm, 12.5mm, and 9mm, and would not part with them, though I thought until not too long ago that I would never part with my pair of 7mm units, but alas, the eye relief was no longer enjoyable, for my eyes. I am sure that the 6mm and 5mm will appear soon.
  4. Hope you don't have to wait too long to discovers how good it is Ade....
  5. It does John, no getting away from it , and, as Waterer-in -Chief, I am spared !
  6. Bang on cue, 10pm , according to the Met Office, the wet stuff is falling ( precipitation if you wish to be posh... )
  7. Thanks John. After good seeing last evening, it is set to end tonight with 5 days of rain, but I will persevere, as Antares has always been a target of desire, if one that I have ,perhaps ,felt unattainable.
  8. I bought mine from a trusted friend who said " all it does is track, but solidly and accurately", and indeed it did for the few years that I owned it. I was lured by the prospect of GOTO and it was , frankly, a disaster. I had very few enjoyable evenings with that mount, always a fraught experience. Never part with it Craig, it owes you nothing.
  9. Well that is very encouraging John. I have, within a couple of miles from where I live, a ridge which gives a fine view of the Southern horizon and I had wondered whether it was worthwhile taking my Vixen ED up there to try to achieve the split of Antares, something I have never attempted. Your post gives me hope that it is indeed worthwhile.
  10. I really don't know how to to handle this banter. My recent attempt to join in earned a deserved rap across the knuckles ! !
  11. Excellent work Craig ! I see in that image an old black EQ6. I had one of those for my 5" refractor but traded it for an NEQ6 , the worst decision I have ever made in Astro I think.
  12. I have a Father of the same ilk, who at 91 years old still living at home, on his own, disassembled his vacuum cleaner, ordered online a new clutch and fixed it rather than throw it and buy a new one , as is so often done these days. I have inherited that, but not even close to the same degree...
  13. That certainly gives a lot of scope Jeremy, and you could buy a lot of scope for £1500...
  14. This is absolutely the point ! If the seeing is perfect,a half decent eyepiece will etch the image in your mind forever. I wish I could remember now, but the most stunningly brilliant image of Jupiter, I have ever seen was through my 5" f15 refractor using, I am fairly sure, a 12.5mm BST 60 Deg eyepiece.
  15. Hi Stu, I was out last evening with my 4" Vixen ED and bino and what I saw at 104X looks exactly the same as your 3rd image. I am never sure what Mags I get with my powerswitch.
  16. Bargain is an understatement Guy. A couple of years ago I paid, I think , around £30 for an 8" Henry Wilder mirror. Everything else in this project is to be sourced, so don't hold your breath, it could take a decade. Congratulations, what a find !
  17. Definitely worth doing. Tal tripods are very good and really quite inexpensive.
  18. Another beautiful telescope rescued and returned to the fold.....nice one Dave, congratulations...
  19. Yes, I have to agree Ade it is poor......NOT..
  20. That is all I got Paul, but worth it. Well done
