All Doom and Gloom from Brian Cox

ugh once again the bbc DO NOT make programs just for your viewing pleasure, they have to appeal to a wide audience to get satisfactory viewing figures, or else the program/series gets binned.

Actually, that is wrong. They have a commitment to public service broadcasting which means precisely that each programme doesn't have to appeal to a wide audience, although the overall output clearly has to cater to a wide audience. What has been happening more and more is that the requirement to educate is being fudged with "shows" like this one which is 80% entertainment. It's about time the regulator started kicking up a fuss about this.

I thought it was a bit slow, It did have some interesting stuff in it, the explanation of entropy I thought was quite well explained but the whole thing could have been told in 15min instead of 59min.

haha! Doug I like it! I think there were far too many swooping panarama camera shots of Brain Cox posing on some mountain face while the wind blows through his hair etc etc but apart from that it was good! :)

I've not seen it yet either - but, having attracted 9 pages of posts, it's got to be worth a view !.

not all of us by any means but there is some disgruntlement from a fair few members, why I am not really sure, are most of the positive comments coming from the newer members/beginners of the forum as they are so keen on anything astronomy related at the moment?, I include myself here, as opposed to more experienced members who have SEEN it all before and are not comfortable with what may be a new era for astronomy or am I way off the mark and its just that some people don't care for brian cox :(

The more I see, the less I like. He may know his stuff but totally fails to give that impression ... I rather suspect that he's a typical product of modern hyperspecialization and therefore knows rather less about astronomy and cosmology than a non-specialist like say David Attenborough does about nuclear fusion.

It's not only Cox's programmes - the book "Why does E=mc^2" which bears his name is also the worst introduction to relativity that I've ever come across - I don't expect rigour in a popular science book but I do expect good science ....

I thought the science was fine for the level that it was pitched at.

What made my wife and I groan were his ridiculous poses between narratives. We think he may eventually disappear up his own bottom.

In terms of 'doom & gloom' I think that the series 'Planets', also on iPlayer (it's gone now :) ) fares much better and the background music is not cheerful at all. Really depressing :( In terms of content, 'Planets' has a lot more information than 1st episode of 'Wonders of Universes'.

But what's wrong with explaining the public about entropy' ??? Should the general public be 'protected' by lingo mostly known to those who've had a short encounter with Physics or Chemistry? I don't think so. As long as the explanation is clear and not overwhelming, then knowlege can never be too much :) In my humble opinion of course :D ...

Like most tv programmes though this isn't likely to be his own idea.. the directors and other creative minds behind all these programmes have more to answer for than the presenters themselves..

He is still relatively new to the presenting thing as well so I doubt he would have much weight to throw about in order to change things if he doesn't agree with them.

I thought in a few of the shots he actually looked uncomfortable as if someone had told him to "go and stand over there looking pensive" when he was actually thinking "not again..." :(

I really have to back Brian up here, I think he's a class presenter, I can't think of anyone else that could give such bad news as "the death of the universe" with a smile on their face,

Come to think of it, he's always got a smile on his face, and there's too much seriousness in this world, so good on ya Brian.

I have to say maybe the first episode didn't quite scratch my learning itch (and i'm a noob), but I'm still looking forward to the next episode.
