Am I, or my pretty basic laptop missing out on something here? as soon as I start zooming on the image it starts to run out of focus and definition, no better than my pitiful efforts at DSLR images of the Moon. .

Once you have zoomed in you need to wait a short while for the out of focus image to "clear". It might take longer on some pcs than others.
