Just some fun really! :D Here are some photos from my big eyepieces and how they compare with each other in terms of size.

What are your weird combos? :D

Size isn't everthing but these are very nice indeed :thumbright:

Perhaps we should plan a 2018 "Occularholics" Calendar ? - some of your pics would make a great start !

That is a very nice idea. Perhaps our sponsor could organise something get it printed and put it in the "Stargazers Shop". Perhaps even a percentage could go to a selected charity?

Now where's my 6mm plossl for a size comparison...?

What's the height of that combination? Can you reach the focuser when using it or does it require an assistant?

Yeah, I don't use the Paracorr with the PM in practice... It's like sticking a frac into the focuser!! I do like John's ingenious multi purpose use as a sock dryer

My contribution to the calendar - better make it December's page :icon_biggrin:

For December it would have to be more "seasonal" socks John, but I appreciate getting them out of the sock drawer just isn't done in August or even nearly September.

Came across this one on the Seibert Optics website. Here are the specs of the big one (the smaller one is a 40mm 2" Pentax XL):

Fitting: 4.3 inches

Focal Length: 110mm

Apparent Field of View: 55 degrees

Weight: 10 lbs / 4.5 kg

Scope: Lick 36 inch refractor

Magnification Delivered: 149x

They might be small but there is something about the classic "volcano top" ortho that is iconic in my opinion :thumbright:

I really haven't got sufficient experience (yet) to give a technical exposition on eyepieces but I think I've got to the point of knowing something good when I look through it and I'll confess to being somewhat amazed at the little orthos. It started with a 10mm BCO and then when the 12.5 volcano top came up I couldn't resist it. Definitely a case, at least in my scopes of "less is more".

I'd like to see some form of an additional scale added to these images, be that a rule or a 330ml can to offer folk some form of real life scale in addition to that, of  just being side-by-side with another eyepiece.
The very first picture for example that Piero provides could quite have easily been taken with a macro lens.
A little control over my depth of field and I could make all my eyepieces look the same height. It's not until I see John's 'socks', whereby the added prop gives away the true like scale of some of these monsters.

Just my observation.

Another big toy is the ES30 100deg 3", fitted on a 3" diagonal..

What eye relief does the ES 30mm have? Ethos not enough, Panoptic OK. Not sure about Naglers.

I don't own the 3" ES 30mm 100deg, and certainly don't plan to get one!

https://www.explorescientific.co.uk/en/Eyepieces/Explore-Scientific-100-Ar-Eyepiece-30mm-3-76-2mm.html

See Manual:

Item code Item Focal lenght (mm) Barrel diameter (") Lenses in Groups Apparent field (°) Eyedistan ce (mm) Field stop diameter Height from end of barrel Barrel length Diameter Field stop position* Weight (g)

0218430 Explore Scientific 30mm 100° 30 3" 8/6 100° 19,1 52,2 150,0 40,0 106,5 8,00 2250

=> eye relief: 19.1mm

Ethos eyepieces tend to have ~15mm eye relief. For many people this is completely fine, unless one needs spectacles.

I do need spectacles.

I would need to try one of the 30 100s before buying as 19 is the minimum, then also buy a focuser and diagonal so the EP can be used on my SCT and refractor as well as dob. £2k total conservative outlay.

?
