The California Nebula

Recommended Posts

Here's a quick California Nebula from the other night.

200mm f2.8 lens on a modded Canon 100D, ~65 minutes total exposure in 1 minute unguided subs.

Fairly happy with it, a fair amount of structure showing with some hints of the extended nebulosity and surrounding dust. Can just make out the mysterious circular feature at top left which I was hoping to capture. Wanted to get at least a couple hours on it but the second battery for the 100D went flat, it seems to die much more quickly in the cold while the 1100D keeps chugging away.

Have posted this before but here's a wider shot that shows the nebula in context, taken with an old 24mm lens.

Lots more data from last week still to process. :)

Thanks everyone. The widefield shot is my favorite of the two for the variety and busyness of the scene, and as an enhanced view of what I can see visually.

I find it interesting how differently the camera sees the sky than the naked eye. When looking at Taurus, to me Aldebaran doesn't stand out that much from the V of the Hyades, but in the widefield shot it's a giant.
