Astro Panel    oh my God -  Wed night still looking good, Thursday less so but the BBC doesn't agree unfortunately

Looks to me as if Saturday is still in the balance at the moment - rain early in the day but clearing in the evening with some clouds - 50/50 chance of our weekend Blaenavon meet  going ahead at this stage I would say.

 

Our small band of clear night predictors for this year have gone optimistically way above last years guesses but at this point thats not looking a good move although last year January was exactly the same and the worst month of the year - is there a pattern emerging?

Keeping everything crossed for the Saturday night meet Steve. This weather is so frustrating - although I take some comfort in the fact you mention it is at least no worse than last January. Tonight still looking promising so I'll try to squeeze in a couple of hours with the new UHC just in case the weather doesn't play ball on Saturday.

Was gurtted last night James- got home from work, had some dinner and looked outside - sky was beautifully clear and crisp with just the odd rogue cloud. Decided to go for it - got all the gear outside, all the thermals on - collimated the scope outside - and in the half hour it had taken me to get everything set up outside the damn clouds had completely taken over- even started some light rain. It really is the most frustrating of hobbies lol

Astro Panel    I'm losing faith in Astro panel rapidly after last night - may switch to the beeb

I thought long and hard about whether to consider last night observable even after I got all my gear out and was clouded out before I got an eye peice out - but on reflection that didn't happen until 19:30 and if you had been quicker than I was and got out before your curry and checking what to tape on Sky you could easily have got a good hour or so in last night - conditions to that point were actually excellent -slim pickings at the moment with no end in sight although for once both the BBC and Astro panel are showing clear skies at Blaenavon on the weekend but not until about 9pm so on a knife edge again perhaps- not sure I would want to be setting up in the light just to wait for 3 hours to get started - we'll see.

Astro Panel    - Tuesday evening starting to look good- fingers crossed.

Shame about Blaenavon on Saturday but I still manages a session in the garden in the early evening which wasn't one of the better ones unfortunately- that early in the evening people still playing with their lights and the seeing was not great despite the clear skies none the less glad to get out. Last night was quite frustrating as well - clear then cloudy then cler - it was that sort of weekend I guess - no observable night given for last night would have been a nightmatre in the wind and frequent cloud cover despite the brighter interludes.  Colder weather forecast for the end of the week- lets hope that translates into clearer skies.

25 out of 27 days rain - no wonder the chances to observe have been few and far between. Last year February was one of the best months all year- nearly time to write off January.

I noticed that astropanel (7timer website) isn't working well at the moment. It went offline for a few days this month, and now it's stuck on a three day forecast from last Sunday. Says it should be clear atm, but the heavens are fully open, with excellent flow, right now!

Its the second time I've noticed it Rhys-  mines the same stuck on Tuesday evening. The author of the software frequents this site- last time I posted a thread specifically on Astro panel - the next day it was running perfectly - could be coincidence I guess but its running on borrowed time as far as I'm concerned at the moment.

Terrible conditions tonight and tommorrow and Thursday followed by a possible superstorm on Saturday - but there is hope on the horizon- the metrologists I follow are talking possible cold event in @ 8 days time so fingers crossed this brings better weather for all - if I was a betting man however    :0(

At some point last night we must have had clear skies because the icing of snow we had on our cars last night was rock hard and took me ten minutes to scrape off the car this morning. Apparantly theres at least another 3 fronts pushing in through the week but it is progged to get a lot colder at the weekend nd into next week. This really has been a disastrous winter on the observing front - giving serious consideration to just give up altogether this year.

Being that the weather has been so bad for so long,  it would seem likely that there would be a flip side to it.

Observing is a "good weather" hobby,  guess we all need a "bad weather" related hobby as well.

Observing is a "good weather" hobby,  guess we all need a "bad weather" related hobby as well.

I'm 50 in a few weeks Mike so I'm treating myself to a new toy - did consider something more meaty in the telescope dept but this winter has pushed me into new guitar territory. I play the guitar (badly) most nights - if I've gotten out the scope half a dozen times since last April thats it - perhaps its the scarecity value that makes it such good fun when you do get a chance?

I'm giving last night the benefit of the doubt such are the slim pickings at the moment- there were periods of complete clarity despite the odd rogue cloud drifting by during the earlier part of the night and if Dr Rhys can get out and do some observing in it then its good enough for me - normal service to be resumed for the rest of the week unfortunately.
