Worst day of the week coming up - a hint of dry weather to come next week whether that translates to clear skies is unknown at the moment

Well didn't see last night coming but what a pleasure it was. Must admit my enthusiasm for astronomy is waning a little this year the conditions have been so appalling- a few decent nights and we have full moons- its just not happening at the moment. Never mind- heading towards some of the best views of Mars shortly-  surely we're due a break sooner or later

Its got to the stage where I do these recordings every few days- has it rained- yes- has it been cloudy- yes have we got the scope out again- no - this is starting to go down as the worst observing year ever (well in my 2 and a bit years anyway)

There  have been patches over the last few days but not for long enough to warrant getting the scope out apart from earlier last night. Friday night especially earlier on looks like an opportunity I think I'll take. Still good possibilities for Mars and Saturn at 10th May reaches opposition and not at stupid o clock so still plenty to look forward to before scope hibernation time.

Tuesday looks to be a killer evening with 7 out of 10 across the seeing, transparency, and pickering scales. I might be tempted to drive up myself if the forecast holds true.

Where do you tend to observe in Brecon Steve? I've only ever taken my scope up there once and ended up setting up in a lay by on top of a hill somewhere. Views were fantastic and skies were crystal clear.

When I've gone that way James theres a place a bit further North than Brecon on top of Mynydd Epynt by the Drovers arms- I'd say it was the first time I've really understood what a really dark sky was. Its about an hour and twenty from where I live - it is very isolated up there and it is on a hardstanding on the side of the B426 I think it was but theres hardly any traffic at all up there- like I say it is pretty isolated. There is a place near Trecastle which is not quite as far that a few people go to called the USK reservoir - I've never been there my self but I know the road there pretty well - might do some google mapping over the weekend if you fancy a trip during mid week and we get lucky with the skies though I think the moon might still be a issue.

I keep promising Faulksey a trip up to Mid Wales- in the Elan Valley - I took a trek out there in the summer to spy it out and it would be amazing but it is even further into mid wales so would be a Saturday job with a really good forecast required.

March is getting off to a great start just a shame the moon is in the neighborhood for the next few weeks. looking good for the rest of the week - I'm reserving judgement on tonight (Sunday) as theres quite a bit of high cloud about but might take a stroll across to the farmers field with the bins later on to see whats about.

For the trips into Brecon James we need the moon out of the way and thats not going to happen tonight unfortunately. Beginning of April I'll probably be packing the scope away for the season (apart from one night in May when Saturns in opposition) so am really up for one last night of observing before then so at the end of the month as the moon disppears over the horizon I'll keep an eye open for the forecast and do some reccies as to where we can go and have an evening up there for sure - but for the time being  it'll be the garden wit bins for 10 minutes. Lets keep in touch and see when the opportunities present themselves as the moon disappears - cue 4 weeks of rain of course lol.

No problem Steve. Secretly relieved this morning as I was up most of the night with my daughter who had a high temperature anyway! Might see you up Blaenavon on 28th although I have a Friday wedding to attend the day before so it really depends how clear my head is!

Dont forget steve that im up for the mid wales trip if it does happen. All this talk of packing away in April , I think I've only seen you twice this season!!!

Yes its been major disappointing this season hasn't it Pete - I'll be in touch if theres an expedition at the end of the month don't worry.

Peter I was going to ask you if you could do me a favour in April - I'm going to New York to see my daughter for a week - would you mind on those days just keeping a note of whether it rains or not and whether the nights would be classed as observable or not ? Don't need to post anything on the forum just drop me an eamil unless you don't mind updating the clear sky watch - would be a shame to let it go as I think it could be interesting over a number of years to see if any patterns enmerge- don't worry if you don't fancy it I can always ask mam lol

Unbelievably after the vile winter we've had we are shortly heading into record observable nights - 9 is the record so far both observable and non observable but its on the horizon (along with the moon damn) who'd have thought it.
