Some wispy clouds developing as I went to bed last night but the stars were still visible, I think this may be the end of the hot weather - the thunder storm rolling in at 5am certainly kept me a wake and is probablyy the theme for the rest of the week now.

Clouds rolled in last night very late in the night but the moon was huge on the horizon as it rose. Starting to see a pattern emerge late in July where clear nights are followed by late clouds and some rain clearing by day with the pattern repeating itself as we move into a period of more unsettled weather as the heatwave dies down. Still hope on the horizon from my weather forum that though not as consistantly hot as Juy we could get a reload into August along with thundery showers but after the summers we have had in the last 3 years I think this one is without doubt a banker.

Nearly on for a record consecutive nights observing last night but seems the needle gets stuck at 9 days for observable and non observable so far - who'd have believed it.

Well look at me, 2000 posts up yesterday and didn't even notice- where has the time gone . Will be offline for a while now as we're on hols for a few weeks but will keep a record and update when I return half way through August - already noticed the nights are getting a little shorter -Astro darkness will then only be a few weeks away - looking forward to it already.

I'm a bit further north than you at the moment Keith in Newquay Ceredigion. The skies here are some of the best I've ever seen. The milky way was still clearly visible last night but I've yet to bring my scope down though hopefully will rectify this in the winter and get into mid Wales again for a decent session.

  • 2 weeks later...

Right - back off the holidays in Sunny Mid Wales time for a catch up

Have I mentioned before how bright the Milky Way is in Newquay (Ceredigion) - kept thinking it was cloud but straight above our place out into Casseopia every night - just stunning, anyhows

How good has July been on the clear skies front - over 60% chance to do some observing. August has gotten off to a slow start but the nights are getting noticeably shorter now back to evening observing very shortly for me now.

Thanks Mike- well last night wasn't too bad. I only stood outside just after 11pm for 15 minutes- saw the Milky Way from my back garden, the ISS pass over and half a dozen meteorites. Despite the intermitant banks of clouds the seeing looked pretty good last night but may have been a bit frustrating with the clouds though apparantly it was clear in the early hours and the temperature had dropped to 6 degrees - changes are afoot with our seasonal climate for this year I think.

Well the stars were out last night with minimum cloud cover but in all honesty with the moon full in the sky and low fairly late at night and the moisture in the air I didn't even bother getting the bins out but if you needed your fix there was an opportunity. Back down to Mid Wales over the bank holiday weekend so fingers crossed for some dry and cloudless weather - whats the chances on a UK Bank holiday?

Not sure what it was like in S Wales over the bank holiday weekend but in Cardigan the weather and skies were fantastic although both Saturday and Sunday drunk too much to take advantage even with the bins but on a positive note did make my first live guitar and singing performance in a local pub. The landlords paying me to play in the pub next door next week to drive their custommers out as well.

lovely night last night - nearly time to dust down the scope and check colimation for the forthcoming season. Is it possible we could get up to a 50% ratio of observable nights this year? Despite the general pessimism about lack of scope time in the UK, this has been a great year - certainly the best in my short time as a sky watcher.
