Last night was so close- lovely and clear for large parts of the night but at 10pm it was still too light to observe- then the clouds started making their appearances. Going to be weekend observing only for me I suspect for some time.

Pleasure to see the stars last night but the sky is a dark blue for most of the night until really late - on the fence over summer observing but I think last night just confirmed what I already thought of it - still bins and a deck chair in the warmer nights still a lot of fun.

I think last night would have been pretty frustrating observing with patchy high cloud but I did sit out in the garden for an hour with a glass of wine last night and you cold have got some observing done if you wanted to although the moon is still pretty bright in the sky. Tonight looks promisig as well.

After a slow start May is offering a few clear nights to get your gear out - unfortunately latterly its coincided with the moons appearances but not a bad time actually to get to know your constellations a little better ith the sky bleached out.

First an admission =- the last weeks data is from our holiday home down in Newquay - last night I was up on the veranda at 1am and the sky was stunning - could still see the Milky Way - these light nights are not the best although had a good view of M13 right above us - wish I had bought a little scope but I'm sticking with bins until September now. Was back up at 4.30am to go to the harbour when there was no one about and take some early morning panoramic shots - feeling pretty knackered at the moment but hopefully was worth it when I start messing around in photo shop.

Anyhows- May which got off to a dreadful start has now delivered and tonight is a near certainty again so looks likely to end on a high. Enjoy Saturday up in Blaenavon pity I can't be there- flippin wedding which I don't want to go to means I'm missing out on the night with the S Wales guys and the first Lions game - sometimes you gotta just grin and bear it.

I'll give that a try Len,not sure they'd be happy with me watching while their at the alter though lol. You should be able to get the match live on usagoals. Com though you'll have to spend some times closing those annoying adverts down but its where I watch most of the sky games now.will be going to the pub for the three test matches though.have a great night tonight and catch up soon.

Look at all these negative estimates - is it me or are Welsh people, beaten down by years of rain, just prone to overt pessimism by nature - we'll be at 40% observable by the weekend - who'd have thought that with the dreary January we had.

40% is impressive but I am a firm believer in the british weather so I still think that our estimates will be close

I think thats our natural Welsh pessimism coming to the fore Pete - however having said that in recent years it seems summer is the worst month for rain and clouds-= or perhaps thats just because most of us have this idilyic notion of summer as a dry, warm sunny place not really bourne out by actual experience of recent Welsh summers so perhaps the numbers will plummet as we move forwrad who knows lol

Sat outside again last night just after 11pm and the chores were all done looking at the stars. Astropanel was showing wall to wall clouds but although there was the odd whispy cloud here and there it was pretty much perfect again last night in fact half tempted to get the scope out on Friday and do an all nighter. Got the feeling we could be seeing a record breaking period of observable nights here - 9 currently.
