Welcome, Kev. I am new to the forum, too. Since you mention you are still becoming familiar to the night sky, I can recommend a free (and very awesome) planetarium program called Stellarium. I've been using it for years, and have learned a great deal about the sky and object locations from this program. My best resources, however, are friends who have taught me to star hop...

Happy observing!

Jason

Celestia is another piece of free software that I would recommend. It's a 3D model of the universe and you can use it to explore and visit other members of the local group (though the MilkyWay is the only galaxy that you can travel In to. It's very fun!

Wow! Thanks for all the welcomes. Looks like a nice active site. I have had a look at the stellarium program before but just couldnt seem to get anywhere with it. Guess it will take some more practice. I guess its like having a 'virtual' telescope in your location that you can practice vagigating with?

I have just ordered a book 'Philips guide to astronomy with binoculars' or something like that and will be looking for a copy of 'Turn left at orion' when i get home from work as heard lots of good things about that book as well.

Thats a nice surprise seeing how many people from south wales on here as well. I will definitely make the trip to one of the meets once this weather decides to behave. Not that we get much clear skys around here at the best of times.

Thanks again for the welcome and will have a good read through the forums when i get home later.

Is there a classified section on here? I cant seem to find one, could be due to me being a new member. Was just going to check the second hand market and 'communities' such as this forum seem to be the best places to find specialist equipment rather than fleabay and the likes.

Thanks again for the welcomes

Hi Kev

Welcome form a wet Caerphilly.

we have a good choice of clubs in our location they are Cardiff astronomical society. Bridged astronomical society and the heads of the Valleys astronomical society as i am not sure of which end of the Valley your are from you can choose CAS has a comprehensive series of talks and an observatory in dyfryn gardens. i am a member there though dont go to often at the mo work and things".

I also know the meeting mentioned before at Blaenaveon are great and i know Mike who is also from the Rhondda valley goes so buddy up and go together. there is also many on here that dont belong to any society. buyt they are great to get going as you can ask questions face to face.

Any way welcome to the forum
