Hi,

I note that there is a review by Wolfgang Rohr of the TAL 100/1000, though none of the 125 achromat. I think it is still interesting and I hope relevant to this thread:

I have to admit to sending an email to technosky myself regarding price including shipping for a 125r :hiding:

Will PM as soon as i've worked out how to do it on the new forum software .....

Update - initial visual inspection apparently ok, and was to due for collimation check on Giuliano's optical bench today....anticipating delivery at end of this week, early next week :). Then I'll have to work out how to put piccies up on the site.

Hehe - worked out how to do piccies now :). Should be shipped tomorrow (awaiting confirmation), so expecting delivery in a few days!

Awesome!!

Have been having a trawl through Tecnosky's site. I did notice the part regarding the optical bench test.

Also found a most beautiful looking small alt/az mount.

Fingers crossed for a swift and safe journey for your 125R.

Andy.

Thanks John. Unfortunately Dave, I've had very little opportunity to properly test the scope...possibly slightly out of collimation, but noticably better light gathering than the 100RS. Look forward to a decent long night of steady seeing so I can give it a real try-out. If this ever occurs, I'll post a proper first light. Hoping to get along to PSP12 so will bring it with me then so folks can have a go with it :)

Booked my pitch, Jules, but still need to get a tent (high hydrostatic head needed, preferably submersible, I think) and all the other paraphenalia (camping stove, mats, pots, pans, snorkel, wellies etc. :)). A slight miscalculation of leave left this year too, but hopefully will get that sorted before October!

I'm currently reading a copy "Chosing and using a Refractor", which I got from Amazon last week - excellent read indeed. I didn't know anything about the history and development of telescopes (beyond the normal Galileo/Newton stuff), so I found the first part very interesting.

try getting a copy of The History of The Telescope by Henry C King 1st published in 1955 but has been updated and reprinted several times since. I got a copy off fleabay. Its fascinating to read about the developement of the scope but the most interesting part I find is the history of observation included in it, fascinating to read what early astronomers made of celestial objects which were new to them but which we take for granted, the ears of Saturn for example

Interesting recommendations, thanks guys - will certainly look out for these :). I finished Neil's book recently - I enjoyed the conclusion, with the very interesting argument regarding the merits of the long focus telescope, as opposed to the seeming drive to ever shorter FL apos or astrographs. As much as I'd love to see more variety and availability of larger aperture, longer FL refractors, I guess this will always be a bit more specialised or limited a market. I think that with more people having to overcome light pollution, and the ever increasing affordability of good quality imaging kit, perhaps the apo/astrograph route will become even more popular and a more dominant market over time.
