e-petition - stargazing

I just stumbled across this e-petition for stargazing and wondered if anybody in here had seen or signed it?

I've signed it, but I can't see it getting anywhere near the 100,000 signatures required for it to be discussed in the commons.

I actually don't think its the highways that cause the problems with lighting pollution, but here it is...

https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/27603

"The night sky has inspired humanity for thousands of years. Our myths are built on it. We have learned to navigate the globe by it. Science has progressed because of it. Studying it had shown us our place in the universe and led to more stories, spiritual, philosophical, religious, social and emotional revolutions than any other part of our world. And yet every town and city in the country destroys it with light pollution.

This petition calls on government to give official support to the Campaign for Dark Skies, and grant the night sky the status of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and/or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and to support this status with a major energy efficiency strategy of re-configuring street lighting to protect the sky while meeting crime and safety objectives."

Couldnt we start our own ePetition and include all the other form members? We're quite a few people methinks and maybe we can bring it more to the point of normal street lighting needing to be changed?

Needs to be easy to find on them may be one of the administers can put it at the top so it can't get lost. If you know what i mean. Sundays should be a lights out night for some of the street lights that would be good.

Few months ago had real trouble getting to my parents house in Peterborough, roadworks everywhere. Seemed they were working on every street-lamp, was very annoying. This caused disruption for months...

My Dad had a very early morning operation scheduled recently, so I offered to pick him up and drop off at the hospital around 6am, Oh my (thing that's not mentionable) it was amazing, these new lights are what we need, all the light was focused at the pavement and it was a nice soft white light. I cannot describe how good it was, maybe there are other members from this area that can say what this new lighting is?

I used to work in highways at our local authority. Our street lighting engineers take light pollution serious as its a waste of money as much as anything. I assume that most authorities are on a rolling programme to replace the old sodium orange lights.

No idea but I have heard of them I still think one night a week they should just turn off all the street lights would save the gov money too.

You could call it burglary Tuesday :-)

Just signed it.

A big push from all members of sgl and any other forums would be a huge help. Is there any way the mods could advertise for this to happen?

I signed a few weeks back when the count was still below 2000. even now it is not a lot higher.

Come on SGL members. Do you really want your scope kit to become useless ornaments? If you don't do something about light pollution, the sky will be lost.

Don't leave it for someone else. Other people stay indoors at night leaving on their 'security' lights.

You could but don't think it'll get the

backing.

Best call it non-bulglary then Tuesday as I understand street lighting tends to increase incidences because burglars like to see what they are doing without using a torch that draws attention to them.

Petition signed :icon_salut:
