Hello from north London

I'm a complete beginner from the former people's republic of Islington.

Inner London is not the best of places for astronomy, I know, but last night I got my birdwatching 65mm spotting scope out and managed to find M42 (with a little help from Stellarium on my netbook). My main worry is being taken for a peeping tom with optical equipment round the back of the flats at night!

North Londoner here too - a bit further north though.

Just remember planets and the Moon are not unduly affected by light pollution and some of the brighter deep sky objects ate still perfectly visible (like Orion as you say).

As for the Peeping Tom bit - I think binoculars look a lot more suspicious than a telescope.
