BBC Weather Icons

I did laugh the other night. Straight after Star Gazing Live with Coxy, the BBC weather icons used to denote 'clear skies' were little telescopes!

I am seriously considering writing to the Beeb and asking that they employ these icons from now on.

We should start an e-petition, wouldn't take much for their presenters to chuck in a 'poor astronomy weather tonight' at the end of the weather, or in an extended online version.

What a great idea! They could also tell the moon phases and any interesting astronomical phenomenon to watch out for. It would certainly boost popularity in the subject - the BBC seem to be the champions of promoting astronomy at the moment. Plus the fact night-time weather forcasts are pretty uninteresting for those who plan to be tucked up in bed.

Obviously I'm not a TV programming-type person, but surely it would be possible to include a 2 minute astro focussed forecast at the end of a regular forecast, even just once a day on BBC News 24? Instead of you know, repeating the same forecast every 30 minutes? Just a thought ....

Well, they do a specialist forecast for farmers (on CountryFile) so why not?

You may also want to contact the Met Office first, they after all provide the raw data to the BBC presenters. The Met Office also have experience in many other aspects of the atmosphere that could be useful to astronomers.

They already do that on the main Weather Forecast - or at least they used to.

I'm pretty certain that on the date of, for instance, the Perseids maximum, they used to mention the prospects during the forecast, and give a few tips. Plus, of course, for when there was any major event expected, like an eclipse. I haven't noted whether they still do it outside of the SGL programme.

I suppose any TV channel which has championed Sky at Night these past fifty-five years, is not going to turn a blind eye to astronomical events!

Or in it's place they could use Sir Patrick Moore's face, with a frown!

Or perhaps the SGL symbol, cos that's all I look at when clouds roll in
