Hello Martin, lucky you, a new scope and clear sky on the same day, that's a first. Download yourself a copy of 'Stellarium', that should help you find your way around the night sky, there's plenty up there... good luck with your new hobby.

HI Martin and welcome to SGL, your next step is to invest in a copy of Turn Left @ Orion that should give you a better understanding of what lies above, also look out for the next Prof Cox Stargazing Live, which will be on TV in about ten days or so :p

Welcome Martin, Tonight you should have, Venus, Uranus, The Moon & Jupiter, that should wet your appetite.

As the other guys have said Stellarium is your best bet. I had a reasonable knowledge of the sky (or thought I did!), but Stellarium makes sense of all the names & numbers you'll see on the forum. Good luck.
