£5 scopes first light
wookie1965 replied to Stu1smartcookie's topic in Getting Started With Observing
Dont talk to me about bino`s sent for 4 pair from well known auction site all for less than £20 every pair out of collimation. -
I suspect that the secondary will not be under the focuser as it is screwed up so tight, I collimated a scope very similar to this on Sunday. Owner told me the views were soft and he had used a laser when I put my Cheshire in the secondary was too far towards the front of the OTA. I think you are going have to take the front off and don't spray wd40 put it on a rag and put it around the screw. I would try different screwdrivers or bits until you find a tight fit if you feel it slipping stop try a different one. Failing that may have to use a hacksaw cut the slot longer and use a slotted screwdriver to remove that screw. I wish I was closer so I could come and help.

A warm welcome to SGL and you have 2 objects I have never even viewed from home in all the time I have been doing astronomy. The Leo trio and M51 great images.

Get yourself these use the front of the mini trunking make a jubilee clip to fit put one each side of your tube rings. After balancing your scope by the way then you can loosen the tube rings and spin the OTA to a position to comfortably view through. So it looks like the picture of my 8" scope.

Hi Stu, That is a pity really wanted something with a 50mm objective I have a pair of 10x42 which are excellent but thank you appreciate you showing them to me. They look like they are worth a pretty penny more than likely out of my price range anyway. Best wishes Paul

Hi Stu, What magnification are they please. Paul

Had a good look at them and cannot see how to get to the collimation screws or if they have any. I have parcelled them up and I am returning them for a refund. I will just keep looking hopefully a pair will turn up. Thank you everyone much appreciated.

Ideal magnification for planets.

Yes as others have said all depends on the scope and atmospheric conditions, I went out on the 22nd for a session at 2am on the 23rd I turned the scope to Saturn with my 5" Refractor it has a focal length of 1180mm my 8mm BST showed the best results at 147.5x anything more was soft. I could easily do a 4mm giving. X295 -
Philip R Happy birthday hope you have had a fantastic day 🍰🎁🎉🎊🥂

I got these from a well known site second hand described as very good used condition. They are in cracking nick but unfortunately they are out of collimation £16

I have not had a good look, the seller has said just post back and issue a full refund. But if they could be collimated easily I would keep them saying that I would not fiddle with them myself, I am out at the moment I will check when I get in.

Pity I cannot get them fixed fairly cheaply. Lovely pair.
